Guest guest
Hi Janelle, I needed to be treated for Lyme Disease with antibiotics for a period of approx 6 years after initial infection, sometimes up to twice a year for a month or more. Everybody is different, but for me, my " first " symptom that the spirocete had re-multiplied enough to cause symptoms was a return of " elbow pain " that felt like arthritis. After 10 days on antibiotics, the joint pain would leave, but 10 days is NOT enough to lower total spirocete levels, 30 days was about minimum. I " think " I've finally kicked it, and thankfully, never had significant candida issues. But, she may need a Lyme Specialist that recognizes the chronic nature and need to be treated, possibly long term with antibiotics. Oh, my Western Blot blood tests were almost " technically " negative. (That was 15-20 years ago - supposedly newly discovered strains since then. . .) Agree with info on Candida. A source of a nice webinar is on the _www.vrp.com_ (http://www.vrp.com) website. (or was it _www.thorne.com_ (http://www.thorne.com) ?) the people that sell Candiplex, anyway. Nice adjunct treatment. Denver has a great MD, ENT allergist that treats Candida. Dr. Nonas in Littleton area. Candidiasis can definately cause carb/sweets craving and weight changes, headaches, fuzzy thinking, and constipation or diarrhea, anal itching (it's obvious when present). Allergy and other sensitivities flair up with the yeast over growth. The hx of Lyme's disease treatment would support a yeast theory because she would have been on a bunch of antibiotics for a while. Treatment for candidiasis is still a bit alternative but can make a big difference. I took Nystatin 100000 orally, 2 mls 3 x day, and really fought the carb cravings because the yeast grows on it quicker then we can absorb it. It's a sad condition because you are eating a bunch and hungry but tired all the time from the malabsorption and leaky gut, and allergic and sensitive to everything because your white blood cells know something is going on and are trying to fight. A physician would need to be involved for the Nystation, and I do think at this symptom level she needs it. As dietitian support you could certainly help her with reinforcing all her positive habits. It sounds like she was doing really well. Reassure that the yeast can leave her crazy feeling and that it will pass. Avoid the simple carbs; have protein, fat or fiber with carbs; for a few months a diet ratio skewed a little more towards protein and fat might help starve out the yeast and reduce the fuzzy thinking days (yeast overgrowth really would leave me forgetful and confused feeling before I got treatment). Personally the gluten sensitivity might be a different issue but it'll probably get better after the yeast is treated. I stll avoid gluten but I don't flair up in pain as bad when I do have the occ serving as I did then. Candidiasis is not something that is really easy or typical for a doctor to test for so if her physician isn't receptive there are some herbals that can help. Nystatin is so cheap and common though. I have a case I'd really appreciate input with. Client is a 51 y/0 female, chief complaint is weight gain, recently 35# over past 6 months. Typical weight ~160-180#, now at 214. Been following an organic diet over past 30 years per lifestyle choices, follows gluten free due to her son (w/ severe autism) also follows, and reports increased joint pain when consuming gluten or increased carbohydrate loads since lyme infections. Some stress eating is acknowledged, but not bingeing. More likely under periods of high stress she strays from her typical pattern of eating and eats only high carb foods resulting in flare-up of pain. Denies recent stress eating, however. Exercise pattern of walking 4m daily, typical intake includes seasonal fresh fruits, veggies, and meat/egg/soy/bean proteins. Avoids carbs frequently, generally whole grain or beans if consuming carbs. Estimated daily intake ~1500 kcal. Client is s/p hysterectomy, 2 bouts of lyme disease after antibiotic treatments but still reports symptoms of joint pain with changes in diet. Reports good sleep, Thyroid tests reportedly normal, regular BM's daily, good energy level except increased fatigue d/t wt gain, no meds or supplements. Client practices master cleanse practices ~10x/year and occasional liver & kidney cleanse plans, potentially contributing to metabolic changes & semi-starvation-modes. Client reports suspicion of candida overgrowth/leaky gut through her own internet research. I am not particularly familiar with research on either candidiasis and weight gain or treatment or any correlations with unresolved lyme disease and weight gain. My main focus is eating disorders and client pursued my clinic due to insurance network coverage, not for ED tx. Any insights? I'm really stumped regarding why this client continues to gain weight. I'm happy to provide more information over the listserv or private email. Any input is appreciated! Janelle Fuchs, RD LD The Program Minneapolis, MN _janellef@..._ (mailto:janellef@...)
