Taking it sublingually, under the tongue, allows direct absorption via the capillaries, getting close to 100% of the med into your system. Swallowing it, even on an empty stomach reduces absorption. If there is food in the stomach and/or digestive problems absorption can be reduced by as much as 70%.

So for me, making the switch was deciding if I wanted to get as little as 30% of the med into my system or 90 plus. Considering my budget.. guess which I chose?

It also allows for more consistent dosing. You take it the same way, without variables (like how much food in stomach, is the digestive tract functioning normally today, etc)It means that you don't have to be so picking about timing for meals or how you take things like calcium and iron (which bind with thyroid hormone and reduce the amount that you body can use)

Since I do mini meals throughout the day it's nice to not have to try to time how I medicate and when I eat, I can eat and then dose, or dose and then eat...No waiting.

My system is so beat up from so many years of being underdosed on synthetics and then for several years with little or no meds that I have a lot to recover from. I found that I have to multi-dose during the day... Right now I'm dosing every three hours. If I go much over 6 hours between dosing I start getting really 'yawny'.

I suspect part of my damage somehow involves my conversion ability. But until I can get in for labs (I'm waiting now for my legs to 'heal' before I have blood drawn). I'm taking selenium to help with that.

I also take my adrenal glandular sublingually, to keeps its absorption and dosing consistent. I tried to do selenium and some of my other vitamins that way too... but the taste and how they dissolve is, well, YUCK!

Taking the synthetics sublingually doesnt' provide the same benefits.... and within the last few weeks someone posted that info about synthetics having a sodium molecule involved with their manufacture and that stomach acids are required to pull it off and then allow the T4 to be absorbed.

I will admit that neither of the glandulars (thyroid or adrenal) taste all that terrific, but I've had no problems taking a hard candy or a tic tac or something at the same time. I'm a little self conscious about my breath so I'm now in the habit of brushing both sides of my tongue and the area under the tongue to keep everything clean and fresh (I do dose 6 times a day now so that may be a bigger issue for me than someone that doses only once or twice a day)

It's worth considering, I think.
