Guest guest
I have a important question. can a type two pass out from eating to many carbs and have a reaction like the type one can? I am aware of how bad I feel after eating way to many carbs and sending my sugar out of sight. so I suppose the bottom line is, us type two diabetics, can't really afford to eat lots of carbs, because we don't take medicine to bring it back down. a type one can cheat a little, but us type two really can't, if we wish to feel good and control our sugar. doesn't really seem fair, but could be a kind of blessing in other ways. , you a fine man. go a head and scare the hell out of me any time you see the need to do so. I fell off the eating right wagon and I am trying to get back on and do it right. this time of the year really doesn't make it easy, but when you put it the way, only can do, we are really talking about our life here. most of the time I feel better when I don't eat, but we have to eat. my doctor suggested to me that maybe I would do better if I ate six small meals per day, instead of three regular meals. as far as a bite of this here and there, it really does add up pretty quick, when you say a chocolate kiss has five carbs. never have I just ate one of those little bite size candies. once I eat my sugar in to making me feel like crap, there really isn't any thing for me to do to make it come back down, except maybe ride the hell out of my exercise bike. I really don't know if I can pass out or go in to a sugar reaction since I am only type two, but I have noticed that if I eat wrong, I get really sleepy and act kind of like I am drunk. I did have my a one c down to six, but the last three months it has probably went back up some, because I haven't been a good boy. ok, no way do I wish to loose a foot or leg or worse then that. I guess it is time to start eating right and being careful with the carbs. thanks for all your tips and most of all, thanks for caring and sending out these messages that make me stop and think about what I am doing to my body. please don't take me serious, the gentlemen pig Christmas cheating > > Hi all. > > Thanksgiving I posted a message cautioning folks to watch carbs. Guest guest
Mark, I am glad that you can see the heart of my posts. Some might not like them when I post them, but hey, they are meant to challenge our thinking and willpower. Listen, I would suggest to you to get on some insulin Mark. Who cares if you have to take medication to control your sugar. It is not a sign of weakness or defeat, in my opinion, it shows strength since you would be doing it to gain not only better control, but some flexibility. It is better than living in a dam cage your entire life. At least if you were on insulin you could get out of the cage once a month *smile*. Don't get me wrong, I sincerely admire you for your efforts to try to stay off any medication. I just hate to see you suffer so much and living that restrictive of alife. I worked with Harry and others on list to help them carb count and learn how to dose humalog. If you ever want help doing that, I am here for you man. Harry/Pat are here to help too. We all three are seasoned in it. Regards, Christmas cheating > > Hi all. > > Thanksgiving I posted a message cautioning folks to watch carbs. How many > actually did? Guest guest
Dear Gentleman Pig: You are absolutely right about eating too many carbs. It will make you feel like yuck and yes, you could end up in the hospital because your BG goes so high. It can end you up on insulin shots. I look at it like an alcoholic does booze-you feel good when you are eating or driniking it, but feel like hell afterwards. Yes, this is a hard time and yes, type one diabetics can cheat a little by t asking extra insulin, but it is often hard for type ones to estimate how many carbs are in the goodies that are around this time of year, so type ones can feel awful too by eating too many carbs. also, type ones may over-estimate how much insulin that is needed to cover the carbs they are eating and then you have low blood sugar because of taking too much. It is just much better to eat right all the time. Re: Christmas cheating I have a important question. can a type two pass out from eating to many carbs and have a reaction like the type one can? Guest guest
Mr. Daubenmire; My good friend no one on this list should be put out or offended by your admonitions on Thanksgiving. None of us want to hear the things we don't want to hear. This is why Corporate America is in such sad shape today, too many " Yes Men " . I recall attending a corporate meeting in long about 85 or 86 when the price of crude oil was spiraling down like a stairway. I worked for a company named Petroleum Information and we produced information about gas, water and oil wells. We knew everything imaginable about any hole in the ground from the mid 1800s to the current time in the United States and abroad. When the price of oil was high we did well because everyone wanted to know everything about oil well drilling. When the price of crude was down (below $15 per barrel) we did not do well at all because no one wanted our information. Anyway, the price of crude was below $12 and falling according to any source you wanted to look at. The corporate plan was to expand and hire more and more people to meet the anticipated increase in the volume of requests for information. The Vice-President of the company claimed that his sources told him the price of crude would soon be above $25 per barrel, an unheard of thing in those days. I will never forget the look on his face when I calmly asked him what would happen if crude dropped below $10. I thought he was going to fire me on the spot! Petroleum Information had around 4,000 employees Worldwide then. In 1992 when I decided to leave the company we were down to around 600 employees and a year after I left in 1993 the company consisted of 200 employees. Now, to bring this awful, long harrang to some reasonable conclusion I would point out that the ultimate plight of Petroleum Information is not unlike the plight of the Diabetic or Alcoholic who is unwilling to hear sound counsel. Now, after reading your formulas and other information you divulged in this email I just wonder if you have ever studied Reagonomics? For some unknown reason I conjured up pictures of Ronnie Reagan showing the infamous pie chart way back when. I think the pie which was supposed to be cut into about 8 pieces had at least twenty pieces going to here and there. Keep up the great work , Harry, and others. God bless you and may you have a very wonderful Christmas... Cy, the Ancient Okie... ----Original Message----- From: Daubenmire Sent: Monday, December 20, 2004 6:09 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: Christmas cheating Hi all. Thanksgiving I posted a message cautioning folks to watch carbs. How many actually did? Probably not many but some I'm certain did. In addition, some seemed bummed out by me cautioning them on the carbs. So, this Christmas post/warning I'm going to teach you how to cheat some if you are using humalog insulin or novalog. If you are not, don't bother cheating it won't work! You'll just be high sugared. We have turkey and ham for Christmas and all the other carb infested foods: pies, cookies, candy, rolls, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and on and on the devilish food goes *grin*. I load up on turkey and green beans and find the lowest carb bread around, normally my 6 grams a slice bread with butter on it, and I will do my best to limit myself to 60 grams of carbs and no more. Of course, that is with dosing humalog to cover the 60 grams of carbs. Type twos don't even think of it or you'll be running your rear off for 1 hour or more to burn off just 60 grams and still be high and feel like crap. If I eat more than 60 grams, here is what I do... I'll have to do my routine of " total carbs divided by 15 times 2 units of H per 15 " .... then tag on 6 more units to grow on *grin*. So I tag on 6 units extra to cover the carbs but in order to tag on 6 more units, I have to eat at least 90 grams or more. Then I do a two hour post meal test and if am running low I pop 2 or 3 glucose tabs and am done with it and got some holiday goodies too. So, to rcap, if I am going to tag on 6 extra units of H, I have to eat at least 90 grams of carbs to do it. Other than that, I keep it 60 grams or less and stick with my normal mathematical equation that works. I.E total carbs, divided by 15, times 2 units of H per 15 grams. Not recommended for the newbie or those just starting out using humalog and carb counting. However, after a while, you learn to manipulate the system some and *occasionally* enjoy some carb foods. I still say, stick as close to 30 to 60 grams of carbs as possible though even if eating a little more carbs and dosing humalog. If you skip the two hour post meal test then bye bye nice knowing you. I can just see it happen... someone on list here reads this, says I'm going to try it, and then at holidays folks get involved in family talk, doing this or that, lose track of time, next thing you know they are passed out on the floor with a piece of pumpkin pie in their hand loll. I'm not kidding, set an alarm on your watch for 2 hours past the time you dosed the humalog or novalog. When it goes off, stop whatever you are doing and check your sugar! Some holiday ball park carb counts: * any piece of *normal* size pie or cake 30 grams * half cup of icecream around 20 grams * 3 normal sized *round* cookies 30 grams * 1 cup of mashed potatos 40 grams * 1 roll 12 to 20 grams based on the size of it. * half cup of corn 20 grams * chocolate... risky but... if you have ever ate a bite sized snickers piece that has 5 grams in it. 1 hershey kiss has 5 grams in it, and so on. So, you can size your piece of chocolate based off a hershey kiss, for example, and then count the carbs *roughly* and then do a 2 hour post meal test. Even more important than this... have someone sighted tell you the carbs in the foods you are going to eat off the bag... just make certain they read it correctly or your dead/a goner! Note: if you eat a normal sized candy bar, they normally have around 30 to 35 grams of carbs in it. Normal meaning kit kat, m & m's, snickers bar, and so on. Not the giant sized, just the normal sized bar you would purchase at a store. Do any of this at your own risk! If you pass out, it's because you misjudged the carbs, didn't do a two hour post meal test, and you passed out from not following guidelines. BTW I'd say if this will be your first time doing this, do a 1 hour post meal test, 2 hour post meal test, and a 3 hour post meal test just to catch any possible lows. Remember, large numbers, large mistakes, small numbers, small mistakes! You want to play? You have to pay the piper on your finger tips *grin*. Also, if you don't use humalog or novalog don't even bother trying to cheat you'll just be high sugared. A final warning is you could pass out from doing this so do it at your own risk! Normally my 2 hour post meal tests are around 75 and then my 2.5 is at 45 and my 3 hour is at 30. How do I know? I tested my body under super vision to see what my curve would be like with large doses of humalog. Be aware that using large doses of humalog or novalog can cause the effect of it to go on clear up through 3 hours. So, you really think it is worth it after reading all this? If so, go have fun and if you pass out, you were warned! Finally, why do I post this? Because last time some folks seemed bummed out when I encouraged them to bac off carbs and watch them at thanksgiving. If you were bummed by my post, how do you feel about this one me posting how to cheat and risk your life? All this is really to just simply say its easier to watch the carbs and limit them! Guest guest
Hi Folks, Just an idea here. I do not have the recipe, but there is a delicious broccoli and cheese casserole with butter. No soup or bread crumbs added. I guess the broccoli would have some sugar, but mighty low. It is full of flavor and is substantial. Don't forget for those of us who want to cut down spices sure help a lot. Rita
Guest guest
, I do not know how many carbs in one sugar free chocolate but I will find out. either way I figured it kept me on track and did not make me feel so left out. I used to consider a Christmas as a diabetic nightmare. I would not eat anything bad then finally I could break down and pig out in the end of the holidays. this way I stay legal. it seems like the holidays is geared around food, food, and more food. and the older I get the more critical it is that I stay on track especially after being educated on what lies ahead if you do not take responsibity for yourself and know whey can happen of time on the damage that can be done to our body if we do not take a grip . from Canada Christmas cheating > > > > > > > > > > Hi all. > > > > > > Thanksgiving I posted a message cautioning folks to watch carbs.
