Guest guest
Hi! Thanks for your help. I had new labs drawn on Friday including ferritin so I will post those when I get them. Here's the numbers I have now. Cytomel only 75 mg free t4 .06 (.08-1.8) ft3 243 (230-420) TSH 0.07 3 grains of Armour ft4 2.1 (same ranges as above) ft3 515 TSH <0.01 1 1/2 grains of Armour: ft4 1.0 ft3 192 TSH .02 2 grains of Armour: (labs drawn at 4 weeks on dosage, no Armour taken that morning before test) ft4 1.1 ft3 217 TSH 0.01 Prior to any meds my labs were: TSH 2.90 ft4 1.1 ft3 273 My PCP said I wasn't hypo but I had tons of symptoms of being hypo and went to a new doc that started the cytomel only. The doc I was going to then did muscle testing and said I was allergic to Armour and was going to put me back on Cytomel. I thought been there, done that and it didn't work and I was already getting disillusioned with that doc from some stories he told me. I already had an appointment set up with a new doc. All additional test DHEA sulfate, antibodies, cortisol, etc came back OK except for Testosterone which was below normal. My new doc wants to go by how I feel not any numbers which I'm not so sure about. I'd like to do both. I asked my PCP for the latest labs and she agreed. So far the new doc has tried me on hydrocortisone (although adrenals tested OK I've had a few very stressful years so that's why he put me on that thinking my adrenals were exhausted) and progesterone cream both of which made no difference....seemed to makes thinks worse...had side effects from both. I'll post the new labs when I get them. I think this doc may be open to any suggestions I have but I don't know what to suggest! I'm ready to try anything at this point. If you think Armour is the answer and this new guy doesn't agree I know there's a doc about an hour and a half away that I read is good and prescribes Armour. I'm out of options in my local area. Been to the three top docs. I've mentioned the first and second ones here. The third was strictly a synthroid only doc and told me to go off Armour for 6 weeks and get retested and she was sure my tests would show I was not hypothyroid. Off I went to top doc number 3. My blood pressure is always low, as is my pulse and body temperature also. I feel so crappy that I'm beginning to wonder if I am allergic to Armour. Every day is a struggle. I want to get better and get back to a normal life. It's even hard to remember now what a normal life is. Thanks for any input you can give me. Guest guest
Hi Dee!! Sorry to hear about your situation!! Dee, it's not a matter of Armour not being right for you. Armour IS right for you. Armour contains the exact same things your own thyroid would be giving you--not only T4, but T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin. You will NOT get those on anything else!! So this issue is---what is going on?? When you were on 3 grains, you stated that your free T3 and free T4 were over the top. That is odd for folks on Armour--usually the fT4 is mid when the fT3 is at the top and over. Would you please post your numbers when on 3 grains, and the ranges........ Next, I am confused as to why you decreased to 2 grains. If your fT3 was where you needed it, why the decrease?? Again, knowing the exact numbers and range will help with that. Another possibility is that your symptoms have nothing to do with your thyroid. Have you ever had your Ferritin tested?? Ferritin is a storage iron, and if it is low, it can mimic the exact same symptoms as being hypo that you describe. Let us know the above, and we'll keep exploring this. Janie aka ThyroDiva >Was on Cytomel only to begin with. Didn't feel good cause my ft4 was low. Then I > started on Armour have been on between 30 - 180 mg and not feeling good at > all. At one time on 3 grains my ft3 and ft4 were over the top. I am now on 2 > grains and ft4 is low normal and ft3 is below range. Do you think maybe Armour is > not for me? Guest guest
Hi Dee. How did you feel on three grains? My family traveled far to see a top doc. I am currently on armour and he goes by HOW YOU FEEL. He doesn't test for a year. Rather his wife who is a nurse keeps in contact with you and asks LOTS of questions to avoind any problems such as going hyper. There are many docs who dose this way. Did you feel any better at all on the Armour? You probably need to support your adrenals as well. Best wishes. Hugs, Carol B

Guest guest
Hi Dee. What a frustrating situation you have!! First thing I want to know is how did you FEEL when on that 3 grains of Armour?? It is remarkable that on 1 1/2 grains, and 2 grains, your fT3 was SO low when your fT4 was average. So it appears that your ideal dose of Armour is between two and three grains. Your next option, once you find that good dose between 2 and 3 grains, is to add Cytomel TO the Armour. There are folks like yourself who need to do that. There is NO SUCH THING as being allergic to Armour!!!!!! How ridiculous that doc was to say that. That is like saying you'd be allergic to the hormones produced by your own body. And the doc who told you that you weren't hypo was a moron (like most docs) who fails to look at your low T3. It doesn't matter WHERE your TSH is-- it's that fT3 that tells it all. You definitely should get your testosterone up if it was below normal!! I use a gel with 1 mg. testosterone and DHEA in it from a compounding pharmacy. And getting my testosterone up did make a difference. So it might help you. And a doc who wants to go by how your feel is an EXCELLENT doc, Dee. Consider all the above, and let us know about the Ferritin. Janie p.s. Have you had your antibodies tested?? Guest guest
Thanks for your reply. Is there a way to support the adrenals with hydrocortisone. My doc had me on that and I had a lot of side effects from it. I already have osteoporosis and am scared of the steroid drugs for adrenal support. Thanks, Dee

Guest guest
Carol, Forgot to add on three grains of Armour I seemed to have just more fatigue. I wasn't on it very long to get a good assessment though. I do remember it made my bowels finally move though. I just called my doc to see if I could up my Armour and add some Cytomel to that. Thanks, Dee

Guest guest
Janie, Â Â Thanks for your reply. The odd thing is that on 3 grains of Armour I just felt more tired but my bowels were moving. I didn't have the normal hyper feeling. The free t3 should be in the upper range....right? Did you not feel well until you got your testosterone up? I'm going to call my doctor today and see if he is in and see about increasing the Armour and adding Cytomel. I don't need a script. I have enough here to do it. I took 2 grains of Armour this morning. How would you take more Armour and Cytomel? I did pop a 5mcg of Cytomel last night. I think my timing was wrong cause I had heart palps. I suppose I should have taken it earlier in the day. Thanks. Dee

Guest guest
Janie, I was on hydrocortisone and had many side effects from it so the doc had me stop it. I took 3 grains of Armour yesterday just to see how I'd feel and then I took Cytomel at night. I probably shouldn't have done that. Today I stuck with 2 grains of Armour and took 5 mcg of cytomel a little while ago. I did call both my new doc and old doc and asked about doing that. I haven't heard from either one yet. Yes, I do have MVP. I was up to 75 mcg of cytomel only at one time...had to stop because of the heart palps. My ft4 was also low on cytomel only so I wasn't feeling good. I've only ever been on Armour or Cytomel only....not a combination....and have never felt good. I was only on the 3 grains of Armour for a short period of time because the labs showed I was hyper and my PCP had a fit. I remember being extra tired but no worse than I feel now. Both my top docs (?) say I am a real puzzle to figure out. The one I was seeing first was an either Armour or Cytomel guy. The new one has tried me on magnesium, hydrocortisone, and progesterone. No help yet. My adrenals were tested by three docs and they said they were OK. I'm a little leary of the cortef or isocort because I have osteoporosis and if I don't need it I don't want to make the osteo worse. I think the osteo came from a combo of hypothyroidism and celiac disease. I'd like to hear more about the cortef and isocort though since I don't know much about them and how they've helped some people. I am wheat, gluten, and lactose intolerant....would that be a problem with either one of those? Thanks again for all your wonderful help. Guest guest
Dee, did you ever tell us you were on adrenal support? Because it sounds like you could use it if taking 5 mcg of Cytomel last night caused palps. I, for example, am on Isocort, an OTC support. I take 3 - 6 tabs a day. I also have MVP--do you have that? If you do, T3 can initially increase the palps until the heart gets used to the T3. That is amazing that you felt more tired on 3 grains. It makes no sense. Can you give us more details?? How were you feeling when on the dose before the 3 grains? Next, how long were you on 3 grains? And, are you saying you felt MORE tired after being on 3 grains than you did on the previous dose? I don't know how much Cytomel for you to add to the Armour, but you can experiment, starting with a small amount, and doing labs after 5 weeks to see where it gets you AND paying attention to how you feel, which is better than any lab. Tweaking is the way to finally figure it out. And if it was me, I'd take it in the morning if it's a very small dose. Yes, testosterone made me feel better. BUT understand that I felt fairly good. I just noticed that after a long day of work, I felt very sleepy by late afternoon. That's when I discovered how low my testosterone was. I started the supplementation via the gel. And that did the trick. No more sleepies. Also the same with iron. My Ferritin levels got SO low that I started experiencing the same symptoms of hypo--fatique, hair falling out, achiness, etc. It does take a LONG time to correct your Ferritin levels. It took my a good 5 months of supplementation, and it took me the first 2 months to get rid of the achiness, etc. You hang in there. You'll figure it out eventually.
