Probiotics May Benefit Lipid Profile

Reference: " Effect of probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG intervention

on global serum lipidomic profiles in healthy adults, " Kekkonen RA,

Sysi-Aho M, et al, World J Gastroenterol, 2008; 14(20): 3188-94.

(Address: Riitta Korpela, PhD, Institute of Biomedicine, Pharmacology,

PO Box 63, University of Helsinki, Helsinki 00014, Finland. E-mail:

riitta.korpela@... ).

Summary: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 3-week

clinical intervention trial involving 26 healthy adults, supplementation

with the probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) bacteria for a

period of 3 weeks was found to decrease levels of

lysophosphatidylcholines (LysoGPCho, a proinflammatory lipid),

sphingomyelins (SM, also known to have proinflammatory properties), and

several glycerophosphatidylcholines (GPCho), and increase levels of

triacylglycerols. Levels of IL-6 were associated with changes in global

lipidomic profiles (particularly the proinflammatory LysoGPCho). Weak

associations were found between TNF-alpha and C-reactive protein and

lipidomic profiles. The authors conclude, " This was the first study to

investigate the effects of probiotic intervention on global lipidomic

profiles in humans. There are indications that probiotic LGG

intervention may lead to changes in serum global lipid profiles.... "
