Guest guest
I have to respectfully disagree with you Merav. Bob Green is an exercise physiologist, and telling people to " eat healthy " is within the scope of his degree as far as I know. (And if an RD gets a lot of money to be is ghost writer, that's entirely within the reasonable scope of business practice - happens all the time - and more power to the RD that got hired for THAT job) And, it wasn't his " professional organization " that got him famous - it was his abilities and networking and the people he knew, his TV presence, etc. . . including Oprah - (I know a local guy and OLD friend of my husbands that also worked with her in Telluride, but he just doesn't have the professional savvy/presence, so Oprah stopped hiring him. His doctorate degree wasn't enough. . .) Joy Bauer, RD is on the View, the national news channel this am, and more. It's not ADA that's gotten her where she's at, it's her own education and hard work and personal connections. Any one of us could be where Bob Greene is now, if we just worked our connections right and maybe even were in the right place at the right time. So, no whining! ;-) (I know a friend/RD that's a " head-hunter " of health professionals including RDs. She has a sign in her office that says " No whining " in the circle with a slash. She said if an RD is applying for a position and starts " whining " at ALL, she wouldn't even consider referring that RD, and she also commented that of all the health professions she worked with, RDs were by far the worst whiners!) Guest guest
Sorry, a, I strongly disagree. It shows that everyone can become a " dietitian " / " nutritionist " and thats even more confusing to the public, who get wrongful information from us-reliable sources. As a result, when we come is and say " they are not dietitians " the average person would ask " what's the difference " or " But i heard him on Oprah/Larry King " assuming that the researches for these shows know what they are doing and who is real and who is not. Making then an " authority " that they are not.Its working against us, not for us!PS - I just learned today that in the state of NY you can be a nutritionist if you show that you give " nutrition advice " .... well.......thats about everyone on the planet! Guest guest
Jan,I don't have any problem with his ambitions and the way he promotes himself. I agree - all those who are interested in that kind of career - should do the PR for themselves, or have/hire others do it for them, but otherwise ambition is great and very welcome. My problem is that Larry King and Oprah are introducing him as a nutritionist/dietitian/nutrition authority which is confusing the public. He is not. And with all due respect to Exercise physiologists - they are not RDs. Even if they studied one semester of nutrition classes, doesn't make them sport dietitians, doesn't make them an authority in nutrition. Just like I dont dare to give advice in exercise, even though I go to the gym and I am a yoga (certified!) instrctor. Just like doctors are not dietitians, just because they had one class on nutrition in their 7 years of school. We all know how limited their knowledge is in nutrition, though they would like (some of them) to pretend they do.So ambition is one thing, not being honest and clear that YOU ARE NOT A DIETITIAN that's where my problem is. being ambitious doesn't mean you have to lie or mislead. and the public should know that when they get nutrition advice from a personal trainer/exercise physiologist/Oprah/Larry King they should question the reliability and credibility. This where ADA should, in my eyes, step in, and do the PR for us as a group. Speak up and say this is who we are, we are the ONLY science-based authority in nutrition, nutrition education and nutrition counseling, we are the ones who study this much to become the experts we are.Larry King or Oprah would NEVER invite ANY of us to speak about the flu vaccine, heart surgery or Alzheimer. unless we talk about the nutrition regimen that could affect/prevent that (not the flu....LOL). Aside of it - yes - we should all do it locally (some of us more vocals then others....), but ADA should back us up, should REPRESENT US, INTRODUCE US. WHen they dont - people like Greene step into that space and give advice that are not all true/right but the public drinks it as if it was holly water served by a priest.I don't have any problem with successful, ambitious people. I have a problem that they " abuse " the misinformation of the public for their advantage. The public doesn't know any better bc ADA doesn't step in and tells the public we exist. the average person doesn't even know what ADA stands for (probably Amer. Diabetic or Dental Assoc.) let alone what RD is and what is the difference between this as Greene/nutritionistI believe that when ADA will start to be more present in national TV, be more vocal PUBLICLY (NOT in Capital Hills only but really publicly) getting MNT approved in Washington will be much easier bc the PUBLIC will demand that! Till then, all others, chiropractors, personal trainers ect. will block us or fight us, and its not for the public's benefit. IT could be harmful! It is not about " capitalism " and " competition " is about the public right to know, and the pubic deserves to know what real and what's not!Merav Levi, RD, MS, CDN To: rd-usa@...: Dineright4@...: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 16:24:54 -0500Subject: Re: RE: [NEdpg] Bob Greene, dietitian?
She said if an RD is applying for a position and starts " whining " at ALL, she wouldn't even consider referring that RD, and she also commented that of all the health professions she worked with, RDs were by far the worst whiners!) He's just a clear example of who our competition is - and more power to him! Jan Patenaude, RD,CLT In a message dated 1/13/2009 1:18:43 P.M.
