Guest guest
Hi Christi! I would not sweat the .5 at all! Odds are, it is water weight. The loss at the beginning is primarily water, anyway. And, if you have your period, you might be bloated! If you ate many things with salt, also, that could account. I know I can fluctuate 2-4 pounds in the same day, depending upon when I weigh myself! Stay off the scale, and try weighing one time per week. I am betting the 1/2 pound is just water, and will come right off. Just be sure to keep drinking your water, which will help flush out your system if you had too much salt with all the nuts. I would not think the milk would affect it (unless you are drinking over 1%) Good luck! New here...Need some advice. > Hello, my name is Christi, and I began this diet on Wednesday, > April 21st. Guest guest
Hi Christi, 3.5 lbs in less than a week is great progress! It's probably best to resist temptation and only weigh yourself once a week, so that you're not picking up on little fluctuations. It's totally normal for our bodies to fluctuate a few pounds over a day and over a week and over a month. Water retention, salt intake, undigested food, etc, all add up. Not to mention replacing fat with muscle over time if you are exercising. That said, it's pretty normal to gain a few pounds of water weight around your period, and if you were eating salted nuts you could be retaining some water from the salt. Paradoxically, drinking MORE water HELPS with water retention! If you are dehydrated your body will try to hang on to every last ounce of water. And over time, sometimes a good or bad week doesn't show up on the scale until the next week. I like to put a weekly chart on the wall so I can see my progress over time Best Betsy

Guest guest
Thank you, Betsy! So my resolution is to NOT weigh myself again until Wednesday or Thursday, which will mark one week on the diet, and to keep drinking water! Great advice. Thank you so much! Guest guest
Hi Christi, I'm sure others have responded to this already but I'm going to just in case. First of all when you start your period, your sure to put on abit due to water retention. Also, if your in phase 1 your not supposed to have any milk. Phase 2 you can introduce it back in. Also, peanut butter, if it's not natural or sugar free, it has transfats in it as well as the sugar which will add the weight back on and spike your blood sugar and your cravings as well. I hope this helps some. Terri B> craygoza9 wrote: > Hello, my name is Christi, and I began this diet on Wednesday, > April 21st. The first two days, I dropped 4 pounds. Guest guest
Wait until you're completely over your period. You always have water gain during this time of the month and it's hard to get a good weigh in until it's over. But don't check every day on your scale unless you are willing to accept daily flunctuations of a pound. It's better to weigh once a week or less - you can drive yourself crazy otherwise. Guest guest
Thank you so much for the feedback, Terri. It is much appreciated! I am always sure to only eat natural peanut butter (only ingredients are peanuts and salt), but I thought milk was now allowed in Phase 1? A confusing issue, to be sure! On the SBD Online site, under " Diet Updates " , I am pretty sure I read that dairy (2 cups of fat-free or 1%) is now allowed. In any case, I think I am going to try to refrain from any milk for now. Thanks again! You all are so wonderfully helpful! Christi > Hi Christi, > I'm sure others have responded to this already but I'm going to just > in case. Guest guest
No, you'e allowed two servings of milk a day in any phase. It's fine that you're drinking it. The only reason to keep to fat free and 1 percent is the fat content in milk. It's not going to make you gain if you drink whole milk - it's just not as healthy for you. Latest experts are now saying consuming dairy products help you to lose weight, so drink if it makes you happy. Re: New here...Need some advice. Thank you so much for the feedback, Terri. Guest guest
I have been on SBD for almost 7 weeks now. I have lost a total of 22 pounds. I lost 12 pounds in the first 8-10 days, and then have lost around 1-2 pounds per week for the rest of the time. I have loved it!! I also have to lose a significant amount of weight, though, so it might come off a bit faster for me. As for the milk, just try to stick with skim or 1% if you can. Even with drinking 2% and whole milk some, I still don't think you actually 'gained' 1/2 a pound of fat. No way. You'd have to drink a LOT of milk to do that! I still think you are probably just retaining an extra 1/2 pound of fluid. It will go away! I have been disheartened myself to find an extra 1-2 pounds, but it is usually gone again. I need to STOP hopping on and off the scale. But, I am addicted! ) Good luck to you Steph Re: New here...Need some advice. > As a matter of fact, the milk I drank was 2% one day and Whole one > day, as that was all that was available. Guest guest
I, too, have a significant amount to lose...I am 5'4 " , and was 228 when I started. My first goal is 170, as that has always been my " feel good " weight in the past, I've never been below that! So we'll see how this diet goes and if it takes me on even further to a second goal! > I have been on SBD for almost 7 weeks now. I have lost a total of 22 pounds. But, I am addicted! ) > > Good luck to you > Steph > > Re: New here...Need some advice. > > > As a matter of fact, the milk I drank was 2% one day and Whole one > > day, as that was all that was available. Guest guest
Hi Christi, Noting the time of month, this has a lot to do with weight changes....bloating, salt retention etc... Also, I have found that I have to be very careful with the nut and cheese consumption. I wouldn't worry too much. The scale can drive you crazy. Only weigh yourself once a week at the same time. ~Lori New here...Need some advice. Hello, my name is Christi, and I began this diet on Wednesday, April 21st. The first two days, I dropped 4 pounds. Over the last three days (Fri, Sat & Sun), I gained .5 back...Does anyone know if this is normal, or what may be causing the gain? I drank milk Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which is something I didn't do the first two days on the diet. I am seriously considering cutting the milk. Also, I may have gone a little heavy on the nuts/seeds over the weekend (peanut butter, pumpkin seeds, etc.) I should also mention that Saturday was the first day of my period, I have probably eaten a little heavier than normal the past few days (and may explain the milk cravings) due to this. I noticed my appetite really spike on Friday, the day before I started my period...Maybe more weight will drop once I am done? I hope so! Guest guest
Christi-- Hide your scale. You're getting on it far too often. It's perfectly normal for your scale to fluctuate up and down a bit. As long as you didn't consume more than a couple of cups of skim or lowfat milk, it was perfectly legal. Once a week or even less is enough for the scale. You'll see more difference in the fit of your clothes than the pounds on the scale anyway. Good luck. Guest guest
Milk was added to Phase I in January. Here's the update... South Beach Diet Updates (Published 1/20/04) The South Beach Diet (SBD) continues to evolve as new nutritional studies and information come out. Recently, the results of new studies have shown that some of the " foods to avoid " may not be as bad for us as the original studies on glycemic index demonstrated. There are also some new, exciting studies about the role calcium plays in weight loss. The end result is that you can continue to enjoy all of the foods recommended for the SBD-as well as adding back in a few of your favorites! Here are the major changes: Milk: Old Version: Avoid all dairy in Phase 1, except for less than 2 tablespoons fat- free ½ and ½, nonfat milk, 1 percent milk, or soy milk allowed with coffee. New Version: Phase 1: Now includes 1 percent or fat-free milk, low-fat plain soy milk (4 grams of fat or less per serving), 1 percent or fat-free buttermilk, and fat-free plain yogurt on the Phase 1 " foods to enjoy " list. Limit dairy to 2 servings a day. Note: Feel free to flavor your fat- free plain yogurt like a ricotta creme. Phase 2: May introduce artificially sweetened nonfat flavored yogurt, but limit this variety to 4 ounces daily. Note: Since the SBD is still low in saturated fat, high-fat whole milk products will remain on the " foods to avoid " lists for all Phases. Tomatoes: Old Version: Limited to one whole tomato or 10 cherry tomatoes per meal in all Phases. New Version: Not limited in any Phase. Onions: Old Version: Limited to ½ per day in all Phases. New Version: Not limited in any Phase. Carrots: Old Version: Avoid carrots in Phase 1 and 2; allowed in moderation in Phase 3. New Version: Allowed, starting in Phase 2. > > Hello, my name is Christi, and I began this diet on Wednesday, > > April 21st. The first two days, I dropped 4 pounds.
