Amy;

When Orion was in St. Chris', he had hourly EEGs for several days.

None of these were normal. Even after he had seemingly stabilized, and was

on phenobarb, the EEGs continued to be abnormal, although he had no APPARENT

seizures. In fact, all of the EEGs he had showed abnormal brain activity,

even when he " seemed " fine...

Amy,

Aren't hosptial visits GRAND?!?! Sorry to hear about your brain-fade state

of mind, but I wanted to respond to at least a coulple of questions. Lexi

was also on seizure meds, but she wasn't able to absorb them very well so her

doctor took her off of them. Her seizures are also the kind where sometimes

you can see a change in behavior and sometimes you can't. The doc's said

that her seizures were happening so deep within her brain that they weren't

readily detectable on EEG. So I do know that it's possible to have seizures

that don't show up, and it's possible to have abnormal EEG's even when you

are on meds.

Hope this helps a little..sorry I don't have more for you.

Dr. Kaye is Clayton's neuro and he is wonderful. We followed him to CHOP from

St. s (and I am not a big fan of CHOP - except there ENT dept).

BUT we saw him there a couple of weeks ago and he is great. He is very kind

and caring and will spend as much time as necessary with you.

Love,

Sharon

My 7 yr. old, Zachary, has seizures. he has been in tegretol since he was

about 2 years old. For the most part we have been lucky to have had the

seizures well controlled. When he has had break through ones, they have

either been associated with an illness or not enough meds. Usually an

increase in the meds brings them back under control. At any rate, his

development has been somewhat slow but he has progressed steadily through

the years. Zachary walked about age 22 months, talked at age 2.5, is

cognitively age appropriate, can hold a pencil and write for short periods

of time, and although a few years delayed in gross motor skills he can do

the essentials, (walk, run?)

His original EEGs were actually normal. Our neurologist says that some of

the patients he has with the worst epilepsy have absolutely normal EEG's.

Conversely he has some kids doing very well and their EEG's are awful and

say they shouldn't be. I think like anything it is just a test and has to

be taken in conjunction with the clinical picture.

Zachary's most recent EEG was abnormal in that it showed excessive slowing.

however, it still did not show epilepsy, despite following a period of

many seizures while an in patient and therefore witnessed by medical

professionals who felt there was no doubt we were watching seizures.

Hope this helps
