Hi Kathy...

I was diagnosed on 3/1/01 with follicular carcinoma

three days AFTER a frozen section (done during a

partial thyroidectomy) reported a BENIGN lesion! The

final pathology came back positive. My FNA reported a

lesion suspected to be either a follicular carcinoma

(malignant) or a follicular adenoma <sp> (benign).

From what I understand, the level of invasion seen

through the capsule wall determines if the nodule is

malignant. A follicular adenoma displays the same

type of cells in the capsule but none of these cells

extend outside of the surrounding tissue (capsule

wall). If the lesion is found to be malignant, cells

are found extending through the capsule into healthy

tissue. The level of invasion can help to determine

stage type and severity (invasion into blood vessels,

lymph nodes, etc.)

I'm not sure if this explanation is correct as I am a

computer programmer, not a physician, but you can read

more about THYCA at:

http://www.thyroid-cancer.net/

I'll be thinking of you and your husband and hoping

for the best. Good luck!
