Guest guest
Sue, I live in the suburbs of burg. York is about 45 minutes away. I do not know about their school districts. Probably no better or worse than here. I could try to find someone thru the Autism Society to ask for you if you want. One of my friends keeps in touch with some of them. I do know there is a pocket of children with autism down there. Also have an ex-OT that lives near YOrk. Not sure what a medicaid waiver is. I have a medical assistance card however that covers after primary bills in this state only. No really good metabolic Dr.'s in York sorry to say. But alot of people that have decent insurance go to Kennedy Kreiger in Baltimore which is about 45 minutes from York. What kind of info do you need. Do your children need special education? Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Thanks for the info. Right now we're still waiting to see if Jack gets offered the job. I hope we know something this week! Another woman wrote and said that all disabled kids get Medicaid so I don't have to worry about a waiver. A Medicaid waiver is if the parents make too much for the kid to qualify for either straight Medicaid or SSI. It only takes into consideration the disability, not income. Not all states have one. Here in Nevada since the boys get SSI they automatically get Medicaid. The state does have a waiver too. As for the schools, yes the kids are in special ed. They are mainstreamed 100% but need computers, 1:1 aides and curriculum modifications to make it work as well as OT, PT, SLT and APE. I just wanted to make sure the school district was open minded about special ed. I didn't want it to turn into one battle after another trying to get services. Not that I won't battle!! I would just prefer a nice relationship. ) I understand it's not one big district, but lots of little districts. Do you have any idea what the qualifications are to be a sub teacher in PA? Here in Nevada all you need is a minimum of 63 credit hours with 6 being in professional education. How about being a sub aide? Do they even do that there? Here the school district is huge (almost 200,000 kids) so being a sub (aide or teacher) is a piece of cake. There's work everyday of the week and then some!!! I'm trying not to get too far ahead of myself here. I mean Jack hasn't even been offered the job let alone accepted it. I just like to be prepared. Must be the military in me. ) Thanks again for the help! Guest guest
>Nevada since the boys get SSI they automatically get Medicaid. Actually, this one id federal - any kid on SSI gets the state medicaid program automatically - doesn't even have to do the paperwork to apply. If you don't qualify for SSI, you can apply for waivers in those states that have them usually, since the waiver is waiver of income that would disqualify you for medicaid. Most of them require that you have a current letter of denial from SSI and that you renew it periodically. Kathy

Guest guest
Sue, There is a loop hole (and it is actually called that) that allows persons with disabilities to get the medical assistance card regardless of income, however that person cannot havw more than $2000 in their name. SSI is based on income, but if you qualify as a family then you get the card too. I think it is something llike no more than $3 or maybe 5 thousands per househole of 4. I forget the exact amount. Our district is also huge. And subs are needed badly around here. They are offering subs jobs if they have a college degree even without education backgrounds. My son's class has 3 aides and 2 of us have outside agency aides. Oh yeah in PA the MA card also pays for wrap around services. I get up to 42 hours per week, but I have to make everything up. Taking a break from that as my home person quit over the summer. Tired of opening my house up to others I guess.
