Catheters Escape Doctors' Attention

SUNDAY, Dec. 31 (HealthScout) -- Almost one third of patients hooked up to

urinary catheters after a major operation don't need the devices, a

multi-hospital study has found.

While many recovering patients may not even notice that they are hooked up

to a urinary catheter, the problem is that doctors don't notice either, the

study says.

And the researchers say the neglect of such an important detail can lead to

a serious risk of infection.
