I have been "out of the loop" for almost 2 weeks, so am not sure what responses you've gotten, so delete this if it's repeat information! You do need to use a designated toaster, stick of butter, etc. to be sure of not cross-contaminating. I just went through having to re-buy lots of those items & $$ is always a concern in our house too, but actually got a toaster cheap at Target ($6 or $7), as well as pots & pans, some gadgets, a griddle ($15), etc. The Back-to-School sales were helpful, so read the flyers or go online to see weekly sale items!! As far as peanut butter, jam, mayo., etc. we just started with a NEW jar & marked it GF. To use each item, we spoon out a portion, and THEN spread it with a knife on the reg. or gf bread. ONLY a clean spoon goes into the jars each time they are used so there is not any contamination AND we only have one jar of every item, not 2!! Wash your hands before touching any gf food. I always make my celiac son's plate first, pack his lunch first, etc. to make sure I don't mess up. I just learned to not use a Handi-Wipe on tables & counters, but paper towels. Also, we have a gf sponge to wash gf pots & pans, strainers, etc. I did get a new can opener too, since so much stuff seems to stay with it, even with rinsing after use. Mainly, I think we all just try our best!! This is a wonderful group to turn to with questions -- everybody just wants to help -- so use it as much as you need to!!

Best of luck to you & your education of your family!! If you don't have Danna Korn's book(s), I highly recommend using them to help family members, your husband especially, learn how this disease works & how to work with the disease. Your efforts will serve your son well!!!!!

Hi, new here with a 3 year old with CD...

We just had our son diagnosed with CD. He has had 2 strongly positiveblood tests but his biopsy only showed damage and inflamation from avery severe gluten allergy so far... We think that just means wecought it before it could cause any worse damage...Anyway I am being tested and we are trying to decide if we will testour 1 year old daughter also since she has similar symptoms. I am at a loss though. I keep reading and trying to figure out what Iam doing. I have bought all this special gluten free food and amtrying to be careful but at the same time I just have such a hard timegrasping the concept of things like cross contamination??? My husbandand my family think it's insane when I said that I was told to buy newthings like a new toaster and new collander for his GF food only...And the idea of having multiple items of like Peanut butter and Jellyjust makes my husband convinced I am loosing my mind...I just dont know how serious I have to be about that stuff and what Ican let slide. We are really very tight on money and this specialfood is really killing us, I dont know how I will afford to buy somany new kitchen things if it is really necessary to get them.Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you, , waiting on test results... (5-23-01), diagnosed with CD.Emma (7-17-03), yet to be tested.
