Guest guest
Hi Kiki. Glad your'e feeling ok. It sounds like we are in the same boat right now. I've been going through a terrible lonliness lately. I've been doing stuff like staring at a wall for hours, just thinking. Everyday is painful. But I've really tried to get around people. Any people. For me AA makes me feel even more lonely. So I try to go around family, co-workers, old friends I lost touch with, anybody. Cause I feel a little bit better around others. Less anxious and all. Its hard for me because I live alone and I work in a basement by myself. I think my daily pain comes from having to get through another night alone and another day alone. Trying to keep occupied so I don't lose my mind. I used to think I enjoyed my isolation. The truth is quiet different. I think that I'm supposed to isolate because I'm a bad person or unwanted. Lately, with meds and therapy I'm trying to break out of that. The hardest thing is knowing who to go around. I've been experimenting a lot with differnent people and situations. Trying to figure out what I like to do. Its hard as hell. I feel like I'm trying to bring myself back from the dead. I spent 15 years withdrawing. I doubt I'm gonna turn my life around overnight. But I'm definitely excited at the prospect. Take care Kiki. Guest guest
hey matt, thanks for letting me know i'm not alone. that helps alot. the other day i started stressing about not having a special somebody. man, does that hurt when i think of the time i've wasting being scared of people then being a weirdo aa'er. but, it's okay though cause that's just what i had to do. it's not like we stood still. we were doing stuff. dude, i don't think being by yourself all day is too good. i know you gotta make ends meet though. i know i start talking to myelf alot more than usual when i'm alone like that. somebody wrote on here though that's he'd rather be alone and lonely than in AA. I was like wow. really? Is AA that bad? I guess it is. Got some good points. I've had some laughs. it was definitely a crash course in being in a crowd sober. The wednesday night meeting in my group was like being in a huge cocktail party with out the cocktails. strange, huh? but now we're kinda scared to be out with out the proctective sheild of AA. On the bright side I'm starting to get out of the gray cloud i was in. I wa sick so that didn't help. I feeling better and of course I'm (just in the back of my head) thinking about having a drink again. Only a couple of weeks ago i thought i would end up in an insane asylum if i drank again. (I went out and had some beers) I know it was alot of AA shit but it still scared me. I gonna hold off on the drinks just yet. maybe this weekend i might have a couple but i doubt it. the AA voice scares me. anyways, gotta go but thanks for the idnetification. -kiki " md matt " wrote: original article:/group/12-step-free/?start=8753 > Hi Kiki. Even I, the Queen of Introverts, would wither in such a situation! Just curious--what kind of work do you do? Is there something related, that brings you into more human contact, you could do for a living? Even within the same company, perhaps? This is awful; you shouldn't have to live like this--you don't. No wonder you're so lonely! But now the desire to go back to AA meetings for company makes sense--almost can't say I blame you.. > I used to think I enjoyed my isolation. The truth is quiet different. > I think that I'm supposed to isolate because I'm a bad person or unwanted. Isolation is enjoyable when you are the one choosing the terms. Accepting it as " your fate " or because you are somehow " unworthy " of the attention and affection of others is a different story altogether. > Lately, with meds and therapy I'm trying to break out of that. Guest guest
, thank you for your response. I work as a program assistant. Just a lot of time on the computer. Yeah, I'm definitely in the market for a new job. I did a customer service job before and hated it. But it did keep me out of my own head 8 hours a day. Now, I'm at the opposite extreme: I have no one around. I'm tring to find a happy medium. To work in an office envir. with others but not a customer svc job. Find something where I can communicate and feel part of a team. Its amazing what these kind of jobs do to people. My self image has gone way down in the last three months. I'm tired all the time, depressed, have no energy. My physical appearance has gone down. I don't smile much or laugh. And I'm hating myself big time. No wonder AA's looking pretty good right now!!! But I know this isn't good. And I've got friends who keep reminding me I need to get out of this job ASAP. For my own good. Guest guest
matt, i have been or am where your at to one degree or another. one thing i belive is good to practice when i feel im treading water is to try to change just one thing in my daily life and allow that change to have an effect on me. (no powerlessness here!) this i find is less overwhelming than trying to tackle everything at once, and it allows me to be more focused on task at hand. it may be trying something new, or encorporating something i used to do or wanted do. i learned this after i got sober. when i drank i wasnt doing anything for myself and everything fell apart. also i dont know how much exercise you get or your health condtion, but making some time for exercise in your week would help with your energy level, pyhscial apperance and perhaps even depression. when i got sober i was in worst shape of my life, and i knew i would feel better if exercised. i have been exercising for last 9 months straight and have never felt or looked better and my self esteem is higher becasue i know i acomplished this myself. for me its part of my sobriety to treat myself with self respect in everyway i can.(no thanks to aa here) as for job, i think that work environment can make all the differnce in world. i ahev been working freelance temp last 3 years and have been in numerous work situations and each one is differnt, but the ones which are really good are ones where they treat workers with respect and ahve given thought to the work environemt itself. the world doesnt need another cubical farm that is for sure. hope there is something in this that can be of help. dave " md matt " wrote: original article:/group/12-step-free/?start=8779 > , thank you for your response. Guest guest
Dave, those are some really great ideas. Actually they're similar to some of the things Dr. Burns suggests in his book " Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy. " One of the best bits of advice I ever encountered is, when you are really down in the dumps and don't feel like doing anything, the best antidote is -- Do Something! Anything. I have even on occasion, during a depression, gotten a mood lift from doing the laundry, and got that sense of accomplishment that you're talking about. Of course, exercise would be a much better Something to do. Hang in there, Matt. ~Rita ------------------------------ dmarcoo-@... wrote: original article:/group/12-step-free/?start=8782 > matt, > i have been or am where your at to one degree or another. one thing i > belive is good to practice when i feel im treading water is to try to > change just one thing in my daily life and allow that change to have an > effect on me. Guest guest
Makes sense... Charlotte Kasl in her book Many Roads, One Journey talks about the Al-Anon phenomenon. She says " Isn't it better to physically detach from an abusive drunk than to continue living with him/her and go to a support group in order to learn how to " emotionally " detach, while continuing to share the same living space? " Bad energy is bad energy, and the best way to handle it is to distance oneself from it. Boy, do I know this. The last difficult roommate I had was a woman I met in AA. That was the last time I got someone entangled in my life because I felt sorry for them. (mistake!) She brought so much difficult energy into the house, that it was an effort just to stay standing. Every month would be another excruciating heart-to-heart talk. It was exhausting. Thank goodness she's gone. I hope I never get myself into a situation like that again. I remember the justification I used at the time: " Well, she just has a strong personality " Strong was incorrect... OVERBEARING was more like it. It was like living with a steamroller and having to be artful and tactful and persistent 24 - 7 just to avoid getting steamrolled. And to think, I could have gone to AlAnon to help me " emotionally detach " . Thank goodness I chose the ol' " heave-ho out the door you go " solution, and even THAT wasn't easy! Never again. Guest guest
I couldn't agree more. Whether it's getting an abusive twit out of your life or leaving AA(more than one abusive person in my opinion) it leaves you with more time to make real changes. Sure, it's difficult in the beginning, but how else am I going to learn what I am capable of? In both of those instances, I had time to start to dealing with why I was lonely, and what reasons I had for feeling like I deserved to be abused on a deeper level. I have applied that to AA, my family, and other less than healthy relationships. Instead of being barraged with the chaos of these kinds of relationships-constantly " reacting " to the latest incident, I actually had time to start dealing with the way I felt about myself, and doing something about it. On a side note...is the approacing year 2000 bringing out the nut-cases or what? This week the University I attend had a whole legion of sign carrying fundementalist whacko's with signs trying to bait students with confrontational behavior. Yesterday they were picketing a local church. Rebekah ---------- >From: appledtp@... >To: 12-step-freeegroups >Subject: Re: survived >Date: Sun, Oct 24, 1999, 5:10 AM > >Makes sense... Guest guest
The usual screaming, finger-pointing stuff. Yelling at women that they should be home submitting to thier husbands. They had a lot of huge signs proclaiming everyone who was destined to burn in hell including Buddhists, Catholics , Mormans, people with Aids, Psychology students, anyone who was outside of thier interpretation of the bible. Actuallly, they did brand AA as a false religion. If they didn't have enough people to argue with, they would shout out something controversial to anyone who was just walking by. It was considered " free speech " so the University had a lot of Police Officers and Security Folks all around in case of violence. It was a depressing scene all week. Guest guest
That's a very good idea. I must admit I get more of a good feeling doing the laundry or putting gas in my car than doing some major life changing event! I think happiness is in the small stuff. Because no matter how you are you still have to have clean clothes! Even Jordan has laundry to do. (even though he doesn't do it himself). Guest guest
Hey Pete, Thanks. I need the encouragement. You know, I don't know that much about Al anon except that they got ragged on at AA meetings all the time. But from what I've heard and seen, I think you're right. That's just it about someone woman getting up and talking about how she goes through her low down cheating husband's pockets and changes the phone numbers he scammed? And this is a success story??? To think that once I was considering going to Al-Anon. I have found that people in 12 step programs need more and more 21 step programs. Why is that? Do you just get more and more powerless until you can't do anything? -kiki uncarti-@... wrote: original article:/group/12-step-free/?start=8792 > In a message dated 10/22/99 8:13:53 PM Central Daylight Time, > awatt04@... writes: > > > H Kiki > > > > well done for a w/e AA-abstinent.But this AL-Anon thing - is it for > > real?
