Eating Too Fast...

I had an " Aha! " moment the other night at dinner. I always scarf down my

meals in 5 minutes or so, and then have to sit and wait for my

family to finish. So, last night I sat there and pondered this....

A lot of people (online) claim that they grew up in large families,

so they learned to eat fast in order to get ANY food at all! But,

that doesn't fit for me... So, I asked myself, " Why, then, do I eat

so fast?! "

Well, it's like a light went on... while growing up, if I lingered

at the table, that meant I'd have to " converse " with my stepfather

(whom I don't like), and my step-brothers (who always teased me

mercilessly). So, I learned to eat fast in order to *escape* to my

room as fast as I could. :-?

Then, when I went off to college, I lived with my Dad, step-mother,

and half-sister. And, if I didn't eat *quickly* there, I'd be asked

to help with cleaning up afterwards (and I hate that! LOL).

So, there you have it... it's a habit that I am trying to break.

But, knowing WHY will help -- I can see that I *want* to spend time

with my kids and husband, so I *want* to eat slow and linger with

them. ;o)

Good insight Jenn! I too was thinking about how my eating patterns

must have been 'set' early in life and probably for other reasons than

proper nourishment of my body.

First thing to screw up the hunger drive was 'schedules'. Up early for

work/school. Lunch by clock instead of stomach hunger. Dinner when

whole family together. Snacking in front of TV.

Second thing is what was available to be eaten? Did mom buy for $ or

with variety in mind? Was there a good supply of options? Did we have

the left over 'lucky to have food' mentality that meant we ate what

was served PERIOD. AND you better clean your plate!

Lots of insight to be found and re-vamped before IE even has a chance

to get to work for us?

I've noticed that I eat too fast just because I want to get back to what I was doing before the meal (watching tv, surfing web, reading, etc). I'm not really sure why I do that because I love food so much.

In certain situations, I eat too fast because it tastes good - but that doesn't really make sense because I eat so fast I actually don't really even enjoy the food. I had a whopper the other day and I noticed when I first started eating it I was just shoveling it in my mouth then I remembered to slow down and eat mindfully. It takes effort (right now) to make myself slow down and enjoy the food because by habit I just don't focus on the taste of the food. I'm hoping, through practice, eating mindfully will become second nature (but right now it requires constantly reminding myself to slow down).

Ditto Deb!! Its almost like I need a sign on all my food - Eat Slow!

Enjoy Me! Lots of years of 'habit' to re-train, but just being aware

is the best start I think we all can make.
