Guest guest
You're right, Mark. too much soda is not good for anyone. There is a lot of phosphates in soda. water better then cola? some where I heard that drinking to much pop, regular or diet, will remove the calcium out of your body. could this be true? I learn to like water back in school and still to this day, I drink about one gallon per day. don't get me wrong, I do enjoy diet pop and probably do drink more then I should. maybe I should give up the diet pop and just stick with water and light beer. can't go wrong with ether one of them. Guest guest
water is much better than any soft drink. soft drinks are hard on the stomach and kidneys since the kidneys have to filter out pollutants ingested from the pop. Guest guest
Some time ago - like a few years - Consumer Reports had an article on thirst quenching. Yes, pop is probably one of the worst choices for a good number of reasons. Coffee is also not good. I can not quite remember how is goes but, they spoke of the sport drink products and noted that you could actually create something which would do a very good job of thirst quenching by adding a small amount of lemon juice or whatever to water. The solution should be very, very weak, just enough whatever to convince your intestines that they should absorb the liquid as quickly as they can. It seems to me that about 5% was the number they said would be most effective. If there are too many particles in the water the intestines will think that there is no reason to be in a hurry and they will not quickly absorb it. If there is nothing of substance in the water the intestines know that there is mo reason to hurry either. All of the claims about the electrolytes in the sports drink may also be a lot of fluff and hype. My doc told me that if one would just lay off of two cans of pop per day it would make a 3 to 4 pound difference in a month's time. Cy, the Ancient One... Guest guest
Now, this does bring me to a question. How on Earth did we ever survive growing up? When I was about 12 or so the " big deal " was a cherry or lime phosphate. You went to the drug store (all drug stores of any merit at all had a soda fountain) and you took your girl for a cherry phosphate. Man, that was really living! It was served (as were al fountain drinks) in the glass with the small bottom and large bubble at the top - just right to knock over and spill on your date's nice dress ( yup, girls wore dresses and boys wore pants for dates) if you were not careful. You could top this off with a couple of scoops of ice cream and really impress her. Fast foods? Saywhat? What we had were old fashioned drive ins where the car hop would come out, take your order and write it down on a little book, turn it in and then sometime in the future bring you the food. Before you left you called the car hop back, paid her, she took the trash away and you left. Don't worry, you would not dare drive off without paying because someone hanging around was probably trying to date the car hop and he would hop in his car, chase you down, beat the crap out of you and collect the money for her. If you really wanted to impress her you could talk your mom or dad into driving you to the A & W for some root beer served in a frosted mug, a pretty darn good hanburger and some nice, greasy and salty fries. Oh well, those were the days. Cy, the Ancient One... water better then cola? some where I heard that drinking to much pop, regular or diet, will remove the calcium out of your body. could this be true? I learn to like water back in school and still to this day, I drink about one gallon per day. don't get me wrong, I do enjoy diet pop and probably do drink more then I should. maybe I should give up the diet pop and just stick with water and light beer. can't go wrong with ether one of them. Guest guest
Cy, You're not the only one that remembers those car hops and A & W root beer places. The last A & W root beer stand I saw was here in Riverside circa 1980 when it was torn down to become some Mexican fast-food place that was very short-lived, making way for yet some other building. Don't even know what it is now as it's been mucked over so many times. But yes I remember those frosty mugs of root beer. And no, the A & W sold in the store was NEVER as good as what you got at the stand. They had good burgers, and what you really got there was a wonderful time all wrapped up and it didn't even cost that much. Back in the 60s I was much too young to worry about dating when my folks used to take us to A & W, but I sure have many good memories of a hot Saturday afternoon with a frosty mug of root beer the likes of which I've never tasted since, and a fond memory of things today's generation will never know anything about, just as I also remember drive-ins and diners, all those good things! Like the 5 cent bottles of coke I mentioned earlier, it's all memories I can cherish... Bill
