Guest guest
Donna and Bonnie, Thanks for the information. I have a second appointment Monday with a reproductive endocrinologist who told me he hasn't done a hysterectomy in 20 years. This is good because his staff tells me he performs between two and six myomectomies a month. I think this qualifies him as an expert in the procedure (I hope)! He recommended Lupron but told me I don't have to take it if I don't want to. He did mention that there is a greater risk of blood loss without it. He said I can donate my own blood in advance. I am going to ask him about the cell saver. My mother is a nurse and also told me about it, but I couldn't remember the name. Therese Re: Age and fibroid reocurrence after myo Therese, I also had a myomectomy with Dr. Stanley West ( http://www.repmed.com ) in New York City and I did not require Lupron or blood transfusions. I had the surgery on 01/18/01. I am 46. I hope that I reach menopause before new fibroids start growing. I had bulk symptoms from the fibroids. I did not have heavy bleeding. If you suffer from bleeding problems, Lupron may used to stop or reduce your bleeding prior to surgery. Dr. West took out thirty fibroids and the surgery was five hours long. I had some blood loss for which I was only told to take iron pills for it. Prior to cutting into the fibroid or the uterus, Dr. West injects Pitressin into it to cut off the blood supply, and as soon as the blood flow stops, he cuts out the fibroid. Dr. West uses Cellsaver to save any blood that does bleed out and give it back to me. Cellsaver is collection device that permits the surgical team to collect, wash and return the patient's own blood. In his book, The Hysterectomy Hoax, Dr. West says that there is no such thing as an impossible myomectomy. He also finds that large fibroids are easier to take out than smaller ones. Dr. Toaff, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, says on his website, " Alternative to Hysterectomy " , http://www.netreach.net/~hysterectomyedu/Default.htm , " The expert in myomectomy should be able to assure the patient prior to surgery that the intended myomectomy will not turn into an unplanned hysterectomy because of uncontrollable blood loss. " Please make sure you have an expert to perform the surgery. Donna Jung, 46, New York Metro
Guest guest
Hi and Donna, I did it! I had my myomectomy with Dr. Stanley West on 3/8. He removed 4 fibroids the largest being 10 cm. There was one that was sitting on my fallopian tubes with actually punctured it and Dr. West was able to repair it. The surgery lasted 3 1/2 hours. He used a cell saver as well. I needed medication in the recovery room and I was hooked up to a morphine pump. Even though he told me his patients don't use the pump because they are not in pain I must be an exception to the rule because I used the morphine quite often the first day. I was up walking that night. My abdomen was very stiff and I could not stand up straight but the more I walked the better it was. The next day the IV and the morphine pump were removed. Dr. West came that day and practically dragged me up and forced me to walk briskly. (I really wanted to hurt him!) But I must say it helped. He said he could discharge me that day but I decided to go home Saturday. Now I am home and I feel much better than I thought I would be. Of course it is stiff and sore on the abdomen but I feel pretty good. I must say I am confident I made the best choice in choosing Dr. West as my surgeon. He has patients come from all over the world for his expertise. He performs myomectomies almost every day not like other doctors who performs them maybe once a month. He is VERY confident and that makes me confident. No case is a big deal to him. I think he is one of the best out there. He told me I can conceive if I choose to. Only God knows what the future will hold but I am very glad I chose him. I probably would not have had the surgery if I didn't find him. Thank you Donna and for all of your support.
