The driver allegedly grabbed a broomstick-size metal pipe, slammed it against several bus benches -- many of which were occupied by other children -- and then confronted the girl, a source told The Herald. ''I'm going to put your head through this glass window,'' he screamed, a source said.

The driver, C. Clough, then jabbed the girl several times with the pipe before striking another boy with it, a source told The Herald. The source said the girl was terrified and that at least two other adults -- both school aides paid to protect and oversee disabled children -- did nothing.

Clough, 65, of Hollywood, declined to talk with a reporter Thursday night.

Abuse aboard Broward school buses is alleged

Police, child-welfare and school administrators are investigating two incidents aboard Broward school buses in which one bus driver allegedly hit an autistic girl repeatedly with a metal pipe and another reportedly ignored the plight of a girl who was sexually molested by a schoolmate. Though one case happened in September, the incidents are only now coming to light because Broward school district transportation chiefs waited weeks before reporting the alleged abuse. Jack Moss, the Department of Children & Families' South Florida administrator, said the school district's tardiness in reporting the allegations to the state's child-abuse hotline was ''totally inexcusable.'' Under Florida law, teachers, principals and other professionals who care for children are required to immediately report suspected child abuse.
