My surgeon is Dr. > Stanley West, author > of " The Hysterectomy Hoax " . I was considering Dr. West until someone from DelJunco's (Female Alternative Surgery) (Hufnagel's " prodigy " ) told me that one of Dr. West's patients DIED from post-operative bleeding. I am a bit surprised to see so many women here who used West. By the way, I am new, from CA, so I have heard all about the whole Hufnagel " No More Hysterectomies " losing her license scandal.... and I would consider DelJunco but alas he is not even a gyn nor even Board Certified.... I have heard from women who rave about him tho. This is all so confusing! I mean, what's a girl to think? They write books and lose their license (Vicki Hufnagel...not spoken of highly elsewhere on this site)... they save uteri and get criticized by the vast majority of GYN's.... I mean this is not exactly a picnic now is it? I have heard UAE slammed... I have heard it all at this point... I am just wanting to get it over with and have a myo but at the present I am still trying to figure out with whom! I have a very large multi-fibroid uterus and adenoymas to boot. I am 46 and so you can imagine the amount of flak I get for wanting to save it! Oh for Pete's sake. Well how's that for my intro to the group? I was wanting to ask the womem who went to West, were you aware of the death when you made your decision? What was your impression of him ( I do not like what I have read here about his not listening about post-op pain)? What's his office like? How about the hospital? I personally want to go to a hospital that is VERY CUSHY..... I swear if I have to go thru that I want a foot rub and some ice cream (ha ha)! I wish everyone the very best with your personal situations..... and just hope you will all RESEARCH this thoroughly before you do anything. Seems to me we are on the cutting edge of a major and controversial shift in women's health care, and it is up to us to help shape it. Kudos to the website creator and any physician like minded. - (newbie) __________________________________________________

Guest guest
The New York State Department of Health has a website which gives information on doctors who have been sited for various violations. Check there. Keep in mind that any surgical procedure contains an element of risk. Even if this story is true you should not rule out myomectomy or this doctor. Also remember that many good doctors have been sued. I have a friend who underwent a myomectomy performed by West and she was very happy with the results. That doesn't mean he can't make mistakes, but overall his reputation is good. I would suggest making an appointment and asking him point blank about this story. His reaction should tell you a lot. Good luck.

I would always take information with a grain of salt but I would NEVER ignore information like this before checking it.The woman I spoke to who told me this had been a medical reporter many years ago-this wasn't gossip in a bar somewhere.I would not ignore this. But that's my approach. Guest guest
Hi , I asked Dr. West specifically if any of his patients ever died from a myomectomy performed by him and he told me no! I would be VERY upset if what you are saying is true. I take all information with a grain of salt. When I was looking for a doctor I contacted the HERS foundation and they would not recommend Dr. West. When I asked why I was not given a reason. I found out from an independent source that the reason that they won't recommend him has to do with a lawsuit over book royalties that HERS is involved in. Guest guest
Thanks for bringing it up . I'm preparing for abdominal myo in about two weeks, and any information (good or bad) on the procedure and doctors is appreciated. It truely is a shame they're isn't a sytematic way to find out if a doctor and/or hospital has been involved in a lawsuit (and the results), and the number of wrongful/questionable deaths to help us decide. I guess until then, we have to rely on each other, sites like this (thanks, Carla), and word of mouth!

Did you try her website: Sex, Lies, and Uterine Fibroids http://www.uterinefibroids.com Go to the links on the left hand side, click on The Decision and you'll see a link to Doctors & State Medical Board. Hope this helps. Marsha
Guest guest
Thanks for the info Marsha. I just checked out Carla's site and I admire her effort as one woman who has had fibroids fighting to make a difference and to help out other women with the plague. But what I envisioned is more of a country or statewide, government owned type website where you can go in and just enter a doctor's name and statein which they practice to get a history report on them. If anyone knows of anything like this, please let me know, as I'm still trying to get any information on the doctor performing my surgery...Her name is Dr. Selick in NYC... Winnie. Guest guest
Hi Hazel, So I wasn't dreaming it-you must be in NYC or the area.Anyway you can think of to check who the doctor was? I wonder how you die from too much fluid, maybe it fills the lungs.I remember a coma patient I knew very well and one day his face was swollen like a basketball,it was over-hydration.But he didn't die, maybe they got it adjusted. Its just they are telling me that my myo would involve more rsik etc. and I am interested in all these casualities. Anyway as always Best, Bonnie swan511 wrote: > Hi Bonnie, > I remember that case last year where that young woman died as a result of a > myomectomy and I know for a fact that was not Dr. West's patient. Guest guest
Hi Hazel and Bonnie, I believe the case was even more complicated than the fluids. Apparently the women was attended by a sales rep. from the company trying to sell Beth Isreal Hospital a new machine for the procedure, Of course that person did not know what they were doing and supposedly the physican allowed this to go on. --- Bonnie Andrukaitis wrote: > Hi Hazel, > So I wasn't dreaming it-you must be in NYC or the > area.Anyway you can think of to check who the > doctor was? Guest guest
Nope, sorry ..... this was told to me directly by DelJunco's office manager/nurse/wife and it was about Dr. West. Post-operative bleeding, she said, due to the fact that the " sewing up " was not done meticulously enough and there were too many " leaky " repairs to the uterus. The woman hemmorraged and died, apparently you can die rather quickly hemmoraging from the uterus, before anyone can notice and/or get blood into you. I am only mentioning this because I was considering Dr. West, and still might consider him if I could get answers to this. - B --- swan511 wrote: > Hi Bonnie, > I remember that case last year where that young > woman died as a result of a > myomectomy and I know for a fact that was not Dr. > West's patient. Guest guest
Yes you all have that right....but this was ANOTHER woman according to DelJunco. Maybe I will appoint myself the one to get the details on this and post them to this list, since I brought it up. It would be interesting to know whether DelJunco and wife had it right or not. - B --- Donna Jung wrote: > Bonnie, > > I think it was a hysteroscopic myomectomy.
