Thanks for listening. >> Many foods can trigger afib episodes, but the list of culprit foods is different for different people. Some people can eat popcorn and pizza with impunity, for example, while for me they are afib triggers. You can find out which foods trigger afib for you by keeping track of what you were eating before an episode. Sometimes the afib trigger can be coincidental with some other cause, though, so you may have to try the food more than once. If afib is repeatedly triggered, you know you have a problem with that food. Also, just eating too much at one time can trigger afib. All of this happens because the vagus nerve which controls digestion also, unfortunately, controls heart beat. Any food or substance which causes vasovagal stimulation of the vagus nerve can cause afib in susceptible individuals. Some substances such as caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine are notorious afib triggers, so you are wise to avoid those. I have an older brother who was in permanent afib by the time he was my age, and he believes that the main reason for his permanent afib was excessive consumption of alcohol. He also smoked until about a year ago. He neither smokes nor drinks now, but the damage is done, in his opinion. He thinks that he would have avoided permanent afib as I have for the past twenty years if he had not drunk or smoked. Since you have given up the nicotine habit, that may be enough to put an end to your paroxysmal afib. in sinus in Seattle (15 minutes of afib in 222 days)
Guest guest
Hi, Mike, I am late for an appoitnment, so some quick answers: Yes, foods like pizza in some people can bring on afib. You should learn how to tell afib from your pulse, so you will know what's really going on; it's natural in normal folk for pulse rate to vary with exertion or stress, it's when it is erratic that you're in afib or somesuch. Your doc can give you a heart monitor to wear to see if you are having afib, either a 24 hr or 48 hr or thirty day one. That's really the best way to tell. You are right, you may not have afib ever again, but you also could have an intermittant or progressive problem with it and so need medication. The good news is reducing triggers like coffee and alcohol is a major help for a lot of us in here.
