I've asked my gynocologist about an MRI - but she says it's not

necessary. I really disagree, as my fibroids are numerous and large and

the ultrasounds have been extremely vague with regards to their actual

character -god only knows how extensive they are or how they're

impacting my insides. Can I seek and MRI on my own (ie., w/o a doctor's

referral)?

The reason you doctor doesn't think an MRI is necessary is because

it is very expensive compared to ultrasound, and insurance companies

put pressure on doctors not to order so many tests. I don't know if

it's possible to seek an MRI on your own, but you might try to find

another doctor who is willing to order it. I think it is very

important to know how many and what types of fibroids you have in

order to make an informed decision.

Robyn,

My gyn reccomended a hysterectomy and removal of my

ovaries. The ultrsound was not able to get a clear

picture of what was going on inside. In fact, five

different technicians came in during the ultrasound to

try to get results but could not. I told my doctor

that I was not comforable about making a decision

about treatment without knowing exactly what was

happening inside and I asked for a referral for an

MRI.

She said, " You can have one but that won't change my

decision. "

I replied, " Well, it may change *my* decision!!! "

I got the MRI and and a new gyn.

Keep insisting or check with you primary doctor for

help.

Dear Sue (and all),

This week, my doctor did a complete about-face with regards to the MRI.

Do you suppose insurance had anything to do with it, as I recently

switched from an HMO to a PPO? Robyn

Doris,

I have to have a chest MRI Tuesday & I'm nervous about it. I'm not

nervous about what they'll find, which is hopefully nothing, but more

nervous about having the MRI itself because I've never had one. See my

post that says " Saw Cardiologist " to see why I'm having an MRI.

Kerri, if it is not an open MRI, then ask them to give you a sedative

to help you. My husband who is a big " no fear of hospital equipment

person " had an MRI and he said the next one if he had to have a next

one would either be the open kind or they would have to give him the

sedative. Mine was the open kind and not a problem but I don't think

I could handle the other.

Hi Doris:

thinking of you this day

re the MRI..

I have often wondered what they

are like, but dont wish to have one.

Sedona..

:)

Well, I had my MRI this

afternoon and it was not bad. The noise inside the machine is

rather loud but they gave me ear plugs. It took an hour. Since they

told me to be very still, I lay there with my eyes closed and tried

to imagine what all the sounds were...you would be surprised at some

of my conclusions...I heard a jackhammer, a tommy gun, church bell

ringing in the distance, my dad tapping on a wall to find a stud,

etc. etc. I go for my results on the 16th at 11 a.m. but I can tell

you that I do have a brain inside this skull because I saw the film.

Wish I could have looked at it and know what it meant.
