Guest guest
lantus would not make your sugar go up, like Harry was saying, it is probably from an infection in your body. Infection could be even a tooth that is infected/inflamed. Any sort of infection will spike your sugars. Regards, need your advice Has anyone had this experience and Please pardon my spelling. My doctor started me on insulin on friday August 20, 2004. My sugars had been running unusually high. from 130 to 210. So he started me on Lantis, 6 units at bed time. to see how sensative I was to insulin. Well my blood sugars started going up higher than before. After four days, we reported the readings to my doctor. Yesterday, He increased the dosage to 10 units of lantis at bed time. This morning my sugar was 181. I am very careful about what I eat. And my wife is losing faith in insulin theropy. I am eating les carbohydrates, and I am exercising. So why is my sugar going up with insulin even in small doses? Any advice would be appreciated. Guest guest
Hi Dave, I'm no expert on Lantis and will leave that up to and Pat but you might want to talk to your dr. about taking the lantis in the morning or taking half at night and the other half in the morning. When I first went on lantis in April I had high readings and switched to taking it at night and still have occassional highs in the morning. Also ask your Dr. if your body is fighting the insulin. I know a lady who was allergic to lantis and it was putting her blood sugars in the upper 300s which is real unnormal for her. Sorry this isn't more helpful but like I said I'm new to lantis too. Guest guest
Also, if you have discontinued any oral diabetic medications and you are are not also taking any short acting insulin like Humalog or Novolog along with the long acting insulin Lantus, you have not yet established a basal dose of Lantus. It is nearly impossible to establish a basal dose of Lantus in less than five days. A year ago I started taking Lantus 5 units once per day at night, and at the same time I discontinued all oral diabetic medications. Today I take 36 units of Lantus at night, and it took ten months to reach this basal dose level. It depends on how much insulin resistance your body has built up over the years. The more insulin resistance you have, the more insulin is required. As a general rule of thumb your long acting insulin will constitute approximately 50% 60% of your daily insulin requirements, provided you are not dealing with an infection. This also means you are dosing short acting insulin to cover meals and snacks. Guest guest
Dave, it is not the insulin raising it. You just need more; also, your body is adjusting to it. don't give up on the insulin as it may take a couple (or more) weeks to get the right dosage. also, are you doing blood sugars at other times of the day? If you are on insulin, you really need to be testing your blood sugars at least after eating-2 hours after. If you are not doing this, you are not getting an accurate count of how the insulin is doing. Most diabetics have higher blood sugars in the morning due to what is called " the dawn affect " . About 3 AM, your body starts putting out cortisol which makes your liver put out more glucose in preparation for the morning activities. this makes you have higher glucose levels in the AM. You probably could raise the Lantus 2 units more and see how the blood sugars run. It is actually good that your doc is raising it slowly or you could go into reaction-and that is more unpleasant than having it run high until the dosage is right.--Original Message----- From: Dave Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2004 6:48 AM To: blind-diabetics Subject: need your advice Has anyone had this experience and Please pardon my spelling. Guest guest
Dave, once you get the dose of lantus correct, the benefits to it are wonderful. Hang in there. Ya, like pat is saying, around 3 am your liver dumps sugar to help you wake up/give you energy for the morning. For normal folk, that is fine, for diabetic folks, that makes us run high. Thus, most docs/endos have you take lantus at 8 PM or so in the evening to help keep that morning sugar down from the liver dump called the morning effect, dawn effect, and some other terms. Guest guest
I take insulin at about 9-30 p.m. I don't have any infection that I am aware of. And I had a complete physical the day the doctor put me on insulin. No infection was indicated. And I am not subject to infections as a rule. Harry, What oral medications for diabetes were you on. and which ones did you discontinue. The doctor told me that he would discontinue oral medications later on. but I think you are right, they may be reacting to the synthetic insulin. I have been on lantus for a week now. but my doctor hasn't prescribed any fast acting insulins. And he hasn't said to stop the oral medications. So I am glad to get any and all input from you. Thanks, Dave > Dave, once you get the dose of lantus correct, the benefits to it are > wonderful. Hang in there. Guest guest
Dave, Do you have any allergies or take allergy medicine. I have found that taking some allergy medicine will trigger high blood sugars. You may also have a simple sore throat or just feel run down and that can trigger high blood sugars. Listen to what everyone is suggesting and question your doc if you don't understand anything he is suggesting to you. Being a type 1 diabetic I don't know all about the oral meds out there for type 2 diabetics. Everyone gives suggestions and ideas to try but we are each unique and you have to figure out what is best for you and learn by trial and error. You'll learn alot from this list just keep asking questions.
