Date: 3rd February 2006 Time : 11.00am to 04.30pm Place: Chennai 600 008 IHN an initiative for HIV/AIDS Net, a net work of NGOs working in the field of STD/HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support in Tamil Nadu. IHN is committed to building the capacity, mobilize resources, and address the issues related to NGOs in Tamil Nadu. The Objectives of IHN is to create an enabling environment to respect the marginalized communities by the NGOs and to bring out positive attitude among the NGOs by promoting commitment, efficiency and clarity in implementing the interventions. To improve the quality of HIV/AIDS prevention activities among the NGOs and to share knowledge and skills and provide required trainings to build the capacity of the NGO members. IHN organized the formation meet on 3rd February 2006 at Comfort Inn Marina Towers. Mr. S. Ramkumar, Treasurer addressed the gathering , Mr. A. Bakthavatchalam chairman of IHN shared the objectives of the meeting and Mr. A.J Hariharan General Secretary thanked the gathering for the participation and involvement in the meet. Mr.A.Sankar, Vice Chairman Co ordinated the entire Programme. 96 NGOs participated in the formation meet. This formation meet of IHN is financially supported by TAI (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) Mr.S.Vijayakumar, Project Director of TANSACS , Dr. K. Manivasan Project Director CAPACS, Dr.P.Krishnamurthy, Project Directors of APAC,VHS-USAID, and Dr. R. Lakshmi Bai,TAI-VHS participated and graced the meet. The Project Directors lighted the kuthuvilakku and inaugurated the formation meet. Mr.S.Vijayakumar, Project Director of TANSACS , Dr. K. Manivasan Project Director CAPACS, Dr.P.Krishnamurthy, Project Directors of APAC,VHS-USAID, and Dr. R. Lakshmi Bai, Project Director ,TAI-VHS were all very happy to see the NGOs working in HIV/AIDS field all together. Dr. K. Manivasan Project Director CAPACS, in his speech shared that he was surprised to see all the NGO together. He further shared that the ANC prevalence rate has reduced in Tamil Nadu and that concentration should be given on Peer Education, service and support to the Infected and affected people. Dr.P.Krishnamurthy, Project Directors of APAC,VHS-USAID shared that the speed of spreading rate of HIV has been reduced in Tamil Nadu and that it shows the performance of the NGOs. Dr. R. Lakshmi Bai, Project Director ,TAI-VHS, expressed that they are grass root workers. IHN should bring many changes in Tamil Nadu. Since 1986 when the HIV entered Tamil Nadu, there was no denial from the government and we are working for the prevention. USAID and Gate foundation have come into India looking at the involvement and working of the NGOs. She also expressed that the target group does not see HIV/AIDS as their problem, it is the role of the NGO to make them realize. The NGOs should hand over the project to the community. IHN should be platform transforming of skills. IHN should develop some systems. Mr.S.Vijayakumar, Project Director of TANSACS, shared that such a net should have been stared before it self but it is better to be late than never. Such initiatives should spread to other regions also.
