I’m reading the toddler diarrhea posts

with great interest. My kids drink milk, water and occasionally a

pitcher of juice (Minute Maid). When my Son started Kindergarten the first week

of August, I started giving him juice boxes (Juicy Juice) in his lunch. The

first two weeks went fine. We started having problems on the third week. He had

severe diarrhea all week. By Thursday, he was crying in pain (very unusual for

him to cry) and had a little blood in his stool. I took him to the doctor where

they took a stool sample and blood sample. The doctor didn’t seem to have

a clue what was wrong. I still haven’t received the results of the tests.

Since the juice was the only new food introduced since starting kindergarten, I

decided to take it back out - just in case. The next day, he immediately

started doing better and three days later he was completely back to normal. The

company verified the juice was GF and he’s never had any problems with

fruits or juices in the past. So now I’m left wondering:

1. Is the juice really GF?

2. Can stress cause symptoms like this for

people with CD? Though he doesn’t show it, I’m assuming these first

few weeks of school have been very stressful for him. New environment, new

children, teachers keep changing, they’ve been trying to feed him

forbidden food, the bus schedule/number/routes keep changing….I think all

of that would be stressful for a child who has been home with Mom for the past

3yrs.

3. How is toddler diarrhea diagnosed?

If anyone can provide some insight, I

would be most appreciative. It has been a very stressful and worrisome week for

me.

I've never bought Juicy Juice, so I'm not familiar with the

ingredients, but I doubt it contains gluten. I would guess apple juice

is near the top of the ingredients? As I understand it, and this is

from memory about 3 years old, apple juice is high in naturally

occuring sorbitol, which can trigger diarrhea. A google search could

probably find you the details of how that works.

Maybe it the increase to daily juice that was too much for your son?

Also, I still water my son's juice down about 2 parts juice to 1 part

water - we use reuseable Rubbermaid juice boxes.

As for diagnosing " toddler diarrhea: " Soemtimes I think that's

pediatrician-speak for " Your kids has the poops and I'm not sure why. "

Hi Jill,

The way I understand it, Toddler Diarrhea is just idiopathic(meaning of unknown origin) diarrhea in someone under 4. Many times it is due to juice consumption, because of the sugar content. Many Doctors will tell you to take your child off of all juice, and switch to water instead. If that alleviates the problem, you can assume it was the juice. They thought my daughter had this when she was younger, so I removed all juice from her diet. It made absolutely no difference. That was before she was diagnosed with gluten intolerance.

I also know that some kids are sensitive to apple juice. I hope this is helpful. Good luck.
