Hi ,

RU-486 isn't generally available for fibroid treatment (yet). I'm in a study,

taking 10 mg a day. I haven't had any adverse symptoms; the only thing is

that my periods have stopped, which in my book right now is a good thing. And

after 2 months on it, the fibroids are starting to shrink. I'm down about 25%

from when I started in the study (and my fibroids were extremely big. I was

about 30 week size at the start; the estimate is now 22 weeks....and

dropping, I hope!)

There have been disturbing remarks in the news lately that elements in the

new administration want to " re-exam " the FDA's approval of RU-486. If they

try to rescind the approval, they will be doing a grave disservice to us all.

The word has to get out more widely about the promise this drug holds for

women for health reasons, not just abortions. We can't let things go backward.

You can't stay on ru-486 forever. It's only temporary. It will shrink your

firbroids temporarily, but what will you do when they grow back? Did you

know they usually grow back bigger. I used ru-486 for 3 months before

having a myomectomy. I hate I ever took that drug. My legs cramp me all

the time. I never had that problem before using ru-486. My legs would

cramp so badly some nights I could not even sleep. I don't recommend this

treatment unless you already have something else lined up to treat your

symptoms after you stop using the drug. I think you can only use ru-486 for

up to six months. Most doctors will only let you use it for 3 months

because this is not an approved drug for the shrinkage of fibroids

How long is this study to go on? Afterwards, will you just stop taking the

drug cold turkey?

Watching and waiting and praying for great results for you..

Hi Elise,

The study will last a year. I don't know what will happen at the end. I

expect that when I go off the drug, I will get my periods back and experience

regrowth. I don't know how much to expect will regrow. Being a test subject

is full of uncertainties, but I'm not sorry to be part of the study. The

dosage is very low, and I feel perfectly fine. I just hope my participation

will hasten the FDA furthering its approval to include this usage.

Thanks for your prayers. In a way, those prayers are for all of us.

I have a few questions, because this is not like my experience at all.

1. Did you take this in pill form, or was it an injection?

2. What was the size of the dosage?

3. Who told you that it was limited to 3 to 6 months?

If it was injection, my instincts tell me that it wasn't RU-486, but Lupron.

Lupron is an anti-estrogen that is used (off-label) to reduce fibroids, but

can only be used 3-6 months because it creates an early menopause, complete

with bone loss. RU-486 is an anti-progesterone, and is NOT available for

doctors to prescribe off-label. So far as I know, it's only available through

clinical trials, such as the one I'm in. And no one has said anything about a

required time limit; if anything, they're extending trial times.

If I'm wrong, and it was RU-486, then the size of the dosage may have been a

factor. I'm on 10 mg, and feeling great.

Hi Debbie,

No, I'm afraid I don't. I only stumbled onto knowledge of the one I'm in (at

the University of Rochester) because I saw something on the local news last

spring about their first trial. I posted a question here at the time about

it, and Heleen LeRoux at Rochester contacted me with more information.

I got this drug from a doctor who no longer

practices in Alabama. I was not

part of a study and I hate I ever took that drug.

Sydney,

This is my guess too.I don't see how one could get RU486.Think of the

risk the doctor would be putting himself at-its not approved for fibroids, okay

neither is progesterone, but a lot of doctors prescribe it anyway, but they

have collegues who will stand by them.Give RU486 to a patient and what

do you do with complications, how do you justify that your peers are doing

the same.I bet there is confusion with Lupron.

Bonnie

P.S. I understand RU 486 is approved for fibroids in China>I have the

info.if yo're interested.

You got RU-486??? How? I can't

seem to get anyone to let me try it. I thought you had

to be part of a study. (Are you sure you're not talking about Lupron?)

Hi Bonnie,

I guess I got confused. I'm on RU-486, the anti-progesterone. But I did mean

the great Heleen.
