Guest guest
Hi again thyca buds, I am reposting my question to the list. It seems to have been lost in the shuffle. My question about lower digestive turned into a what is GERD thread. Please help if you can. There has to be more of us with lower digestive problems out there. Ever since my thyca dx I have been having digestive problems. I have a hiatial hernia and GERD(Acid Reflux). I already know that GERD can be associated with thyroid problems. 2 weeks ago I had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy (eeeew). Anyway, My lower digestive problems have been my worst problem I have some IBS like symptoms but the doctor told me last night it might be colitis beacuse the biopsy showed some inflamation. He told me to take fibercon for about 10 days to see if there is ther is any improvment. He said if there isn't any improvement after the 10 days he will see me back to run some more tests. He said there is bloodwork that can be done to determine if there might be some sort of rare bowel condition related to my thyroid problems. He didn't mention what type of condition that might be. Does anyone know what he might be talking about???? I tried to look up bowel and thyca related problems on the net but couldn't come up with anything. I doubt the fibercon will help because citrucel didn't help. Any info/advice would be helpful. I have been playing a guessing game with the million things that have gone wrong with me since my thyca dx. I am a medical mess. And sick of it. Thanks again, Michele 28 from CT dx pap./foll. var. pt 5/1/00 and tt 5/8/00 6/15/01 clean scan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest guest
Michele, I'm sorry no one has come up with an authoritative answer, but that's most likely because none of us know of a connection between thyca and lower digestive problems. There are the problems of everything slowing down that most of us get when we are hypo. There could be a relation between other thyroid problems, hypo and hyperthyroidism, and bowel problems, but they don't leap to mind. All that I can think of is that if one has one autoimmune disease (some forms of hypo or hyperthyroidism), one can be prone to other autoimmune diseases (Crohn's ?) that effect the bowel. I don't think a causal relationship exists between the two, just that an immune system gone awry might damage both. On a practical level, if you are not having good results from the fibercon, there are always enemas and suppositories. Since you already have problems other than just constipation, check with your doctor's nurse--it's possible that those methods might do more harm than good.
