Hi,

Decided to take a look at the medication I am currently taking,

Vioxx, an anti-inflammatory drug. Under drug interactions it also

mentions blood thinners (Warfarin). When I mentioned this to my doc,

his reaction was the same as earlier. If you only take it

occasionally when needed there should be no problem.

Has annyone else taken this drug while on Coumadin? I wonder what

occasionally means. I have been taking it 3 or 4 days in a row.

I guess we have to be our own inspectors of last resort

This is all very interesting. I have chronic pain problems and my

general cardio has said I could only take Tylenol. My foot doctor

prescribed fiorcet but I have not taken that since my PVA. It seems

in all instances, we have to be aware of the interactions of all

drugs. I've been on several courses of antibiotics, prednisone, and

medtrol packs this year for lung and pain problems and the

prescribing doctors have said that I didn't have to worry about their

interacting with coumadin. In the meantime, I call my cardio and

they adjust my coumadin levels and these drugs still affect my INR,

making it way too high. Scary stuff.

Hi ,

My Dr (internist) refused to give me any NSAID (including Vioxx)

while on coumadin, but I'm having some problems with bleeding. NSAIDs

thin the blood, so they would not work too well with coumadin. I'm on

acetemenophen only for pain, but was given ativan for when my TMJ

acts up.

Plus, if on aspirin, NSAIDs (including OTCs like motrin) can cause

the aspirin to not work properly to thin the blood. But, best I can

understand, that occurs when the 2 are taken within a few hours of

each other. Some reports say that aspirin in the morning and NSAIDs

late day or night will not interfere.

I had been taking vioxx on & off past year or more---when I was

diagnosed with afib my new cardiologist told me NOT to take the vioxx

since I was now on coumadin---because of the possible " spontaneous

GI bleeding " that could occur---I mentiomned it to me internist, and

he said OK to take----stayed off it a few months, shoulder got so

bad, got cortisone injection, and with both doctors agreeing this

time that it's OK to take vioxx, because that possible side

complication is very minimal-----I do make sure to take it with food,

and since it's once a day it's easy. I take it every day, and I've

had no problems-- Marcelle in FL- In AFIBsupport@y..., " lisam20011 "

Thanks, Marcelle, that information really helps. It makes me less

concerned when taking Vioxx now.

My hand improved my shoulder got worse, I also have the option of

cortisone injections - but currently go for physical therapy.

Further research re: Vioxx has been very contradictory and confusing,

that's were personal experience makes a difference.

Thanks, Cheryl. I think that was the only concern my doc had. In

case it would affect my stomach, it might cause bleeding there. His

reasoning as long as I only take Vioxx in intervals such bleeding

should not occur.
