Guest guest
Carla I am wondering if you are getting mixed up on your hemoglobin and your hematocrit. The 12 range for hemoglobin is within normal range of 11.5 - 15. Hematacrit should be in the 34.0 - 44.0 range. Check to make sure if it was your hematacrit that was 12 or your hemoglobin before getting concerned. ita

Guest guest
Hi ita, It wasn't my hemocrit or hemoglobin - it is my serum iron - my hemocrit and hemoglobin are at 12 and 32 - a little low, but not too bad - it is according to which lab reference range they use. Anyway, the serum iron is a measurement of the amount of iron that is circulating in your blood - it should be at least 35 - mine is 12, which is far under the normal range, however, I would not actually be considered anemia again unless the hemoglobin and hemocrit fall below the normal ranges. By the way, when I was first diagnosed, my blood counts were as follows: serum iron 12 hemoglobin and hemocrit were 6 & 20 b-12 was 47 I had a blood transfusion which raised the numbers for a while, and I also get a b-12 injection every month - for life. Anyway, the serum iron had risen to 28 after the transfusion, but has now fallen to 12, even though I take a multi vitamin with iron daily, so I know I am not absorbing properly, hopefully at my next check-up, it will be better, seeing as I have been gluten free for almost two months now ! Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it ! Carla > Carla > I am wondering if you are getting mixed up on your hemoglobin and your > hematocrit. Guest guest
Carla Sounds like you could have an underlying problem causing your blood serum to be low. Are you seeing a hematologist? If not, you should find one and preferably at a teaching hospital. Something is causing your blood levels to be too low if you had to have a blood transfusion unless you had some bleeding. I don't think this would be from celiac alone if you have been on the diet at least 6 months to a year. I hope you get to the bottom of it. ita
