Guest guest
The colander is something I would be cautious about, because it is next to impossible to clean all the pasta goock out of the holes, and as even a molecule of gluten is one molecule too much, why tempt fate? I bought a new one that is used just for GF stuff, and now I don't worry about the X-con problem. Same goes for slotted spoons and slotted spatulas. I've marked the handles with nail polish so noone mixes them up with the regular kitchen tools. Peace of mind is worth it as far as my health, and the health of my 11-year old celiac is concerned! Guest guest
I know that most here take any threat of cross-contamination very seriously, as do I. However, I find it very had to believe that any serious contamination can occur from storing food in plastic containers which may have previously been used to hold pasta or such. Personally, I always wash my plastic in the dishwasher between uses. Do I really need to be concerned about storing non-GF food in a container that once held pasta or using a plastic colander for berries that once strained pasta? Please don't totally beat me up over this, just tell me if you have had an episode of cross- contamination illness from this. I am especially interested in those who are super-sensitive. I am less than 1 month GF and am still trying to get a handle! Thanks! Celeste
Guest guest
Personally, I haven't had a bit of problems using the same tupperware as with non GF foods. I wash them in the dishwasher as well. Maybe I'm not as strict as some, I know one girl that makes her husband use mouthwash before kissing her if he ate non GF food. Good luck on your Celiac education!---Danacrc0622 wrote: I know that most here take any threat of cross-contamination very seriously, as do I. Guest guest
I did not throw away all of my plastic storage containers when my family slowly went from “regular” to “GF”. They have been washed dishwasher and haven’t caused a problem. Re: GF vs. non-GF plasticware Personally, I haven't had a bit of problems using the same tupperware as with non GF foods. Guest guest
Thank you all so much. I really did expect to get a chorous of " YES YOU DO NEED ALL NEW KITCHENWARE!!!! " I am very relieved to hear that not everyone feels that is necessary. I certainly don't want to cause damage to myself, but I don't want to go completely overboard if it's not necessary. I will pick up a new colander and call it a day. We are already careful with the wooden spoons. I don't know what people did in the days before the internet. My doctor gave me my diagnosis, said don't eat wheat, barley, rye, oats and that was it. I haven't even gotten to see a dietician yet. But I still consider myself so much better informed than most people just from the wonderful information I have gotten from you guys and the other sites. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Guest guest
I also didn't have any problems using the same tupperware as before we were Celiac. I have always washed mine in the dishwasher. My husband and I are both Celiac so we don't have to worry about the kissing thing, but I have a 21 year old Neice who is Celiac and if her boyfriend kisses her after a meal, before he has uses mouthwash, she has a Celiac reaction. He now uses mouthwash or gum if they are eating out. Cari Re: GF vs. non-GF plasticware Personally, I haven't had a bit of problems using the same tupperware as with non GF foods.
