Guest guest
Sorry so late in getting back to those of you who so kindly welcomed me. :-) It's been a crazy few days. It's always good to hear about someone who is having good luck with the diet and controlling diabetes. As for diabetes being due to weight, it does seem there is a connection, but researchers can't seem to decide whether the weight is a cause for diabetes, or there's something that the person has that causes the weight, then causes the diabetes. Kind of a chicken and egg thing. Terri B. said: > I'm TOTALLY with you on the big bone, insulin resistant thing. I also > am 5'6. LOL! > My current Doc recommended me to do the SBD because I was insulin > resistant. I've been on the SBD for about 45 days and my BS is totally Mine recommended Atkins. And that's what I follow, for the most part. It really isn't all that different once you add back in the carbs in the form of good carbs: more veggies, berries and other fruits, etc. I know better than think I can eat white potatoes, white rice, white bread, etc. because it spikes my BG way too high. > under control. I usually run between 79 and 95. There have been times > when I've been down to 72, but that was first thing in the morning. > There was twice when I was 140, but that was because I was stressed. I have a morning high of about 130. I have a liver dump in the early a.m. hours. That's usually my high for the day, but it makes me have to watch my breakfast meal extra close. I can't run below about 90 or I start to shake. I'm best at 95 to 115/120, so that's what I shoot for. If I get near 90 or below, I have to eat carbs to pull it back up. My mood goes sour, and I'm like I'm majorly depressed. Hubby knows the signs. > Just remember that SBD is not Low carb or Low fat. I understand that. I'm just curious why so much emphasis on what is isn't. Versus what it is. From what I've read so far it seems to be moderate or controlled carb, and moderate fat, with an emphasis on the good fats. Does that fit what you think it is? I'm not trying to start an argument, but after doing lots of low carb investigation, it seems that most low carb diets aren't all that low carb in the long run. Most are like Atkins, with a low to no carb start, and gradual increase to a moderate or controlled daily intake. And despite the standard school of thought about Atkins, it isn't just saturated fat laden meats. :-) Louise said: > Hi Cheryl, Welcome to the group. Are you testing before meals, and 1 and 2 hours after to check exactly what each food combination does to your BG? The reason I ask is that I personally still get a spike with some foods, like yams or whole grain bread. That spike can still cause food to scurry into the cells, but the A1C can still run in the nondiabetic range like mine does (5.8). Okay, enough of this for this time. :-) I'm off to read the next digest. Cheryl

It seems that once I eat, my BG goes down. I'm pretty good once I get down in the 70's to 80's though. I used to be hypoglycemic so low blood sugar I'm used to. > I understand that. I think that there is such a emphasis on what it isn't because so many people have misconceptions about it. I know that I've been talking to people about it and they say, " oh it's a low carb Diet " . NO it's not. And then I have to go into more detail with them. I guess It's just gotten to be a reactive thing for me. > > I'm not trying to start an argument, but after doing lots of low carb > investigation, it seems that most low carb diets aren't all that low carb in > the long run. What we all probably need to explain or take into considerations is that there are carbs in everything we eat. Even Veggies and meats have carbs in them. I guess I have my opinions about Atkins because I've seen a few of my friends have liver problems that they didn't have before after starting on Atkins. **Shrugs** So I just want to make sure that everyone's taken care of. It's the mother instinct in me. LOL Terri B.
