Guest guest
I love to cook when I have time, for example on the weekends. I love to try new recipes, love cookbooks, online recipe/cookbooks. I was starting to get in a rut but my 27 yo daughter moved back home to get her masters and I have signed us up for some cooking classes (she needs them!) but I found that I am learning new techniques and have a new found interest in cooking once again. The first class we took was a knife skills class. I learned so much. Never knew that there was a right and wrong way to use knives. ________________________________ From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of sbsrd@... Guest guest
Knives, huh? We keep ours dull and away from me bc I am so prone to injury! I can even slice a finger while carefully washing a knife. It would look like a Samurai fight in there if I joined that class.... Digna hate to cook? Do you hate to cook? Why? Time? No skills? Guest guest
Actually I have cut myself once since I took the knives skill class (and I'm on Coumadin!). Luckily it was just a nick. But I must say that a sharp knife is safer than a dull one. ________________________________ From: rd-usa [mailto:rd-usa ] On Behalf Of Digna Cassens Sent: Tuesday, February 09, 2010 9:40 AM To: rd-usa Subject: Re: hate to cook? Guest guest
My daughter is a certified professional chef and an RD. She is constantly educating me on knife skills. When she was in culinary school, she would travel with her knives (pre terrorism days) b/c she could not trust that where she was going there would be good enough knives. I read recipes for relaxation. ]Used to subscribe to various recipe magazines, now they are on line. My son gives me a subscription to Cooks Illustrated for my birthday. Cook for 'the freezer' always have. Daughter also reminds me of what can and cannot be frozen. (for taste not safety). She loves to cook too. We have talked about going to Thailand for cooking classes....maybe someday. Guest guest
I am one. Guilty. :)Dont like to cookDont like to bakedont like to clean BUT... will trade - if you cook, I will open a bottle of wine and clean Agreed? It is easier for me to clean then it is to cook. I know what are the " requirements " , I know how to perform it for the best, and there is no " judgment " at the end. Mission accomplished..... maybe that's why?I love eating, and will always try new foods. Why?I don't know. Maybe because my mom didn't have real big kitchen and it was easily crowded (my mom had a full time job... just as an FYI. ), although the best spot in the house was the dining table, which was right outside the kitchen, regardless of mealtime. this where we would " congregate " . So I love eating.... I don't really have a great explanation as for why? I just never got into this. As I said b4, I love to eat and will appreciate anything you will cook/bake for me, even if it is not 3 Michelin Stars level. I am not a picky eater (Mom always said " this is not a restaurant " you eat what is served and appreciate it too.) Maybe I dont like to cook bc it is too massy, maybe because I am not creative, at least not in that area. Maybe because I dont think I have to be a great chef to be a dietitian. Yet, as I said in previous discussions here - I do cook - somebody needs to feed the next generation. So I cook simple. One-pot dishes, most of the time. Guest guest
That's a whole different discussion, and we had it not so long ago. I think we all agreed that RDs need to have some cooking skills. and if you have some common sense, mixed with knowledge of foods, you can modify any recipe without being an excellent cook.
