Guest guest
Sara, I would be interested in what type of volunteer work you end up doing; I am in same condition as you, lousy balance (and eyesight) and deaf. However ie told me that she worked with young " at risk " kids tutoring reading and math. when she was deaf and she said she loved it. If you are interested in talking to her about it, I have her address. And I agree, that sitting home stuff stinks for the self esteem! marie Volunteering >I am going to start volunteer work soon. Guest guest
Sara, Five years ago I volunteered at Mother's Day Out at a Methodist church. All the other workers were paid workers, and I just came one day a week. The lady I worked with even knew a little sign language! I LOVED IT! I was in the 4 year old class and would just " Help " the teacher and play with the kids during recess and even lay next to them if they had problems going to sleep at nap time. It is just a wonderful feeling, and I would not trade that time for anything! I really hope you find something like that! Donna > I am going to start volunteer work soon. Guest guest
Sara, I commend you on volunteering because I had done it also. Eventhough you don't get paid, it's very rewarding because you're helping out insitutions that are understaffed and under bugeted. I want you to know that I empathize with you on " relying on people " and feeling lousy. A few months ago, I had gone to a " Silent Weekend Camp " . Well, many of their activities were at night and I couldn't really walk that well in the dark so I had to ask a friend to " literally " guide me back to and from my cabin. I also felt lousy and looked weak, but don't sweat the petty things. She didn't after all cancel or make an excuse not to meet with you because you are handicapped or deaf. I've had that experience many times. Mark ----Original Message Follows---- From: STUR106054@... I am going to start volunteer work soon. Don't know what yet but am meeting with a cordinator on Wed. Guest guest
Sara, I would like to know who you are meeting with in order to find out about Volunteer positions? I volunteered before I went deaf (and I am, by profession, a Volunteer Coordinator!) and tried three jobs which I did not care for; then I found one doing data input at a family hospice. I liked the people, etc. but they have been bought out by a " for profit " organization, so the only person I would be helping by volunteering there would be some CEO making big bucks! I am interested in finding a new position, so would b e interested in what you find out. Marie Re: Volunteering >Sara, > >I commend you on volunteering because I had done it also. Guest guest
Sara, I'm SO very proud of you for wanting to do volunteer work. You CAN do it ! Maybe you should start slow to find what you can and can't do. Then go from there. Remember, everyone has limitations - some are just more obvious than others. () NF2 has robbed me of my hearing, of my balance nerves, given me carpal tunel in my right hand, and facial paralysis on my left side. However, I have led and continue to lead a VERY full life ! You can too ! Don't let other people's doubts stop you. I've worked as a volunteer with our Vacation Bible School at church for a number of years. I've taught the Deaf Adult Sunday school class, self-published a news letter for deaf moms who are home schooling their children, served as editor of a friend's newsletter, I'm co-leader of the local home school support group, and a free lance writer with published articles. I didn't tell you all of the above to toot my own horn but to let you know that you CAN do volunteer work or just about anything else you want to do. Keep your limitations in mind but by all means do NOT allow them to stop you from at least trying something you want to do. I'm eager to know how your volunteer experience goes. Don't expect it to all be fine in a day or two or even in one week or two. Give this volunteer experience and yourself time to adjust and adapt. If the first thing you want to do doesn't work out, try something else. I'll be in your corner cheering for you, thinking of you, and praying all goes well. K. Guest guest
Sara, College !!! would be wonderful and you can do it !!! I'll be heading into my senior year, but it's tough cuz my right eye bothers me (does not move over to the right), and is hard to see interp. sometimes. I'm also deaf of course but have note takes and interpreters. Just like K. I love writing! It's a toughy making it in college but sooooo rewarding ... The college experience has been very supportive. Guest guest
A while ago, someone in the Crew had given the idea of a " hook for PR " well, why not NF2ers getting thier college degrees or working in a hearing setting despite their " limitations " . My two cents Mark ----Original Message Follows---- Just like K. I love writing! It's a toughy making it in college but sooooo rewarding ... The college experience has been very supportive.
