possible MCT crisis

ne,

Here in NZ I used Calogen, a peanut oil. The protiens are taken out so you

don't need to worry about allergic reactions. (Please note that it is 50%

oil and 50% water in a suspended solution, so that needs to be calculated

in.I also used mayonaise with great success and on occaision, a combination

of olive and flax oil. I am not sure long term how the straight oil would go

but if blended properly, should be OK.

Dear ne:

You can purchase MCT Oil in the United States without a prescription-and it is much cheaper than the Mead -prescription required oil. I am in Canada and require a prescription for it-but I did some research on the different brands available in the United States (I had a truck driver buy any type he came across and then I contacted the manufacturer and compared mine to theres. I did come up with a good substitute but the truck driver stopped driving long distance. If you are having trouble getting other brands in Australia I can get the brand name for you and you can contact the manufacturer directly-they may ship it to you-the price difference was amazing. I pay $ 50.00 a bottle here and this brand was 18.00 a bottle-so if you bought in bulk it may be worth the shipping.

Let me know

Good Luck

Thankyou everyone for your responses to my dilemma last night.

Today it was confirmed Mead ARE withdrawing most of their supplies

from Australia, but that Nutrica and Scientific Hospital Supplies

(SHS),carry MCT oil here also. (I think it is /was just easier for the local

pharmacy to access products from the Mead line)

I am aware of the availability of Calogen, but Gaby actually doesn't have as

good ketone production with it. I guess its just an individual thing, but it

would certainly be an option should MCT disappear from the land down under!

For the record, I can obtain MCT here on an authority prescription (ie, meds

for special circumstances), and with Gaby's health care card, it costs me

just $3.30 per month for 2 litres. Without the prescription, it would cost

just over $50.00 per litre (so I guess my dilemma was not only availability,

but also cost of alternative products!!)

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted on the events that follow on the Aussie

MCT supply!

I have just been told tonight that Mead will no longer be supplyingMCT oil here in Australia.

Presently I use an infant formula powder, infant vitamin powder, proteinpowder, MCt and a little walnut oil.I would suggest a combination of oils. Flaxseed oil has been known to increase

ketones in some...similar to MCT. We use Barleans flaxseed oil. To get the W3

conversions add Cod Liver oil..we use Kirkman labs CLO.

Safflower or sunflower oils supply the w6 fatty acids...and to get the w6 conversions

we use borage oil found in omega twin (flax-borrage mix) also by barleans.

A shot of extra virgin olive oil is a good ideal also.

My son is also gtube fed on the diet, we use a liquid called Calogenwhich we source via the Childrens Hospital in Adelaide. Its actually a LCToil not MCT, but I've been told that you actually get better ketones withLCT by our biochemist.Just curious what the L stands for?? LOng??? the M stands for medium

Chain

I agree with your biochemist...flaxseed oil is a very long chain fatty acid

and has been shown to increase ketones. I spoke to a biochemist

at Barleans for quite some time about this. He said the same thing...its

perfect for the diet. wonder how processed the Calogen is?? Gotta

research that one.. might loose the health benefits if thats the case.

Oh just rambling...never mind...

Glad you found another supplier ne. Its too hard to think about

alternate arrangements sometimes. Life is busy enough w/o spending mental

energy on things like that. At least you can tick this one off.
