Hi Pat,

I know what you are talking about. This has been getting worse for me over

the last couple of weeks.

For instance we were eating w/ my parents and I asked my dad if he needed a

knife (unfortunately I meant a fork) evryone just looked at me. And my

usual response was " ugh...what? " I really thought I had said fork.

Thank goodness my husband can finish my sentences for me. Many times I have

been mid sentence and just look at him and say " what was I talking about? "

About the " space outs " my kids just stand in front of me waving there arms

saying " mom, come back to us mom!! " (aren't kids just wonderful =) )

I completely understand what you are going through. I am 30 and somedays I

feel 130.

Love to you,

G in Idaho

This has been a big problem for me for long time- I know just what you

mean. My husband always says I have a knack for making a short story

long. :) I space out at the dinner table a lot- just stare and go

cross-eyed. My kids tell me to wake up, and it takes me few seconds to

shake it. It got much worse after my first surgery, but better after my

second. Now it's only a big problem when I over do or get tired. I

just turned 38 years young, so it couldn't possible be age! haha

Pat,

I have had this for some time now, but mine is to the point that

anyone notices. It is not only annoying, but embarrassing!

Bless you,

Hi Pat & Everyone else!,

I can tell you right now it's not age related! I am only 22 years old

and I do that quite a few times a day!! I have gotten to the point where I

don't want to be around people who don't know about my Chiari or who choose

not to understand it. I get terribly embarrassed. I had a student teaching

interview yesterday that I didn't want to go to because I was afraid that

this would happen. I have noticed that it happens more when I am stressed

so I try to stay as calm as possible. Hope this helps!

I would like to join the club.

I too looose mewords, especially when I am tired or stressed. It is

frustrating, but the only thing one can do is accept it and we have to do

many other symptoms. I am no longer embarrased, I just say oh, I've lost

the word, or is that the correct word. I guess I am lucky in that my

friends, who belong to a service club know me. They knew what I was like

before and certainly recognize a difference. There is one girl who has

quite the sense of humor. She and I always do volunteer work together. She

knows my energy and brain power is limited, but we do have fun.

The other night I went to a meeting. I felt terrible, tired, dizzy and

lightheaded butthis is my once a month big night out with the girls so I try

not to miss it.

Anyway I wantedto say something about aproject we had worked on together,

but could not get the words out. She looked at me and completed my

senctence. She is always doing this and people get such a kick out of us

having a conversation. We never finish a sentence as we know what each

other is trying to say. She is a god send to me and a comic relief in

difficult situation.

Sometimes I even say things backwards or do what others have said, say

something completely opposite to the word I need to say. Has to be Chiari

who else talks like us.

Hiya....You were just recently diagnosed? No surgery, right? That, to a

certain

degree is normal, for me. When I am in a pre-headache stage, having a bad HA,

or

just had a whopper, these symptoms get worse. Try to keep track of when these

things get worse for you....a daily log is a good idea....if you are

contimplating

surgery, you can go over it with your NSG and evaluate just how much impact

the

ACM is having on you daily life. And sometimes it is hard of us to see

symptoms

increase, because sometimes is so gradual....kinda like gaining weight...but

for

someone else to look from the outside in....they could be more objective.

Hi,

I also have lost words - soooo frustrating. I have given everyone

permission to finish my sentences for me.

I also have the space outs - my parents have always called me their

daydreamed.

And Connie, I also can't remember things from my past.

Other people can give a detailed account of something that happened in my

life, and I can barely remember that it actually happened. Scary! ....

but it comes in handy at times!!! LOL

Carol - Sometimes I also read a different word than what is written. I

notice it when the word doesn't seem right to me. I wonder how many I

miss!

I DEFINATLY have that problem. If it weren't for photographs I would think

I didn't HAVE a childhood. I'm glad I don't remember Jr. High, but friends

tell me about things we did and places we went in high school and right

after (I'm only 36) and unless there's a photo to jog my memory I normally

have no recollection. Now you can see why I'm so into scrapbooking!

Will some memories come back after surgery or are they hopelessly gone

forever?

Now I'm just the opposite. My short term memory (except I do have the lost

words thing) is great. My husband will not be able to find his shoes, keys,

glasses, etc.. and I can visualize where I last saw them even though I

wasn't looking for them. In our house my husband has the " logical and

technical " mind and I have the " visual memory " and " common sense! "

Marg,

I have a fantastic long term memory but terrible short term memory. My wife

can tell me something and I will swear on a stack of bibles that she didnt

tell me, some few minutes later. One thing other than Chiari that does this

is also something Chiari does cause - sleep apnea. With lack of oxygen in

your body, it not only brings on angina symptoms, it also affects your short

term memory. Things that are important need to be organised while you have

it in mind. I have ONE SPOT for my keys, wallet etc so that when I get up in

the morning and need my licence, I know they are all there. However, I tend

to forget them in the afternoon after I get up from sleep so I put the

wallet on my pillow when I get home in the morning and put the keys in my

pocket. When I sleep in the afternoon, I come in and see the wallet on the

pillow, put it in my pants pocket with my keys and so when I get up and have

to pick the wife up from the station, I have them on me. I even have a

little note book now so that when I go out, I will look in it to see what I

had to do. It is all I can do to keep in mind where I have to go. I cant

tell you the number of times I have been driving and then suddenly realised

I am on auto pilot to somewhere and that somewhere wasnt where I was

supposed to be going. This was because I was trying to remember everything I

had to do. Now, I just write it in the book, keep the destination in mind

and I can worry about the traffic properly, too.

I wasnt the most organised person in the world but with this short term

memory loss and easy confusion, I had to LEARN to be. One less worry to add

to my symptoms.

Bonnie and all,

Oh my God, how many of you also can't remember your childhood? Or for that

matter, stuff from a few years ago. I never even thought to connect that to

the Chiari! Please let me know if you have that problem too!

Take care,

Marg

Connie,

Sorry but that problem of your husband forgetting things is something

totally different. My wife calls it:

" Male pattern blindness " because she thinks we cant discern a shape right

under our noses without a wife there, once we are at home! ;-}
