Guest guest
Has anyone heard of fluid retention and why or what to do? would only bloat in the stomach and now he is retaining fluid 7 to 8 lbs when he is syptomatic which is 4 days at a time. He will recover for a few days and then be completely unable to do anything but lay in bed. We have taken him to the doctor and he is baffled also. His heart and kidneys seem to be okay. When he is in bed he can't talk, open his eyes, move, and appears sleeping. We know not much is working when he is out like this but are we doing something wrong? To much fluids? He is fed with a continuous feed at night perhaps when he is syptomatic he can't handle so much fluid? It is only a guess? Do you know anyone else that does this? Guest guest
- I was just told by Dr. Cohen yesterday that this happens to some people when they are stressed metabolically and that it is just a symtom of this and will go away when the metabolic stress goes away. He said the cells get leaky. I don't get this severe, but do have edema throughout my body. I do take water pills which help. Guest guest
Laurie, Thank you for your response on fluid retention and cell leakage. I believe Dr. Cohen is right since it does go away as he starts to recover from being symptomatic. Today had a clinic appointment with the MDA and we are hoping for some help on treatment for him and in fact clearer information on his diagnosis. We will have news in 2 weeks. He is not doing very well and they were quite shocked at his regression since this all started last Christmas. Once again thank you for anything you can tell me. Guest guest
Now this post makes sense with what Laurie added. Maybe the reason the water pills the gynecologist put me on for PMS fluid retention (I would gain up to 10 lbs) helped my brain was that maybe even the brain retains or is affected someway by fluid retention. You () say Mathew becomes unable to do anything but lay in bed which is much more severe than I got (or get) but it is the same thing happening perhaps. I just could never understand why the water pills would have such a dramatic mental effect and thought maybe we shouldn't take them for other reasons. I still have the prescription bottle and just looked. It is 1985 and called Aldactone (spironolactone) a diuretic which spares potassium. It is given for high blood pressure, excess fluid in the body due to other diseases, a specific physiologic antagonist of aldosterone, cirrhosis of the liver, etc. I've been watching the fluid retention posts as we have this on a milder basis, Shenan and I thought hers was the low thyroid, but now this all is making me think differently. We will ask the Dr. about all this and perhaps try this Aldactone again. S.
