Guest guest
It would be interesting to do a content analysis of your email. For starters, categorize the mail as supportive or unsupportive of your deprogramming site, or both (I remember one email from an AA that started out critical but ended up with the writer admitting their mind had been opened by your site). Then come up with some sub-categories: reasons why people support or do not support your site, for example. Then you could break that down by gender (if gender is evident from the email). If possible, it would be fun to break it down by age, socioeconomic status, etc. Judith > Hi list: > I've been wondering something... Guest guest
Hi list: I've been wondering something... I think the deprogramming site is really useful for women especially, and addresses many problems which women face in AA (AA's effect on abuse issues, gender issues, predator problem). Despite this, I seem to get a lot more mail from men. I wonder why this is? Could it be that there are simply more men on the internet? I really wish I knew how women are reacting to the many issues which are tackled on the site, but I just don't get much feedback from them... It boggles my mind... That ratio has been going down recently, but I think there are still about 3 men for every 2 women on the net. (I'm not sure of the exact ratio.) So, taking that plus the disparity in AA into account, there are probably about 3 male AA survivors for every female survivor on the net. 3) It's a cliche, but like most cliches it has some basis in reality: when things go wrong (as in AA), men tend to get mad and externalize their discontent, and women tend to take it out on themselves and internalize it. So, I hardly think it's surprising that you're hearing from a lot more men than women. Don't get discouraged. You're doing great work with your site, and my strong hunch is that a lot of folks are reading it, benefitting from it, and never mentioning it to you. Guest guest
Interesting... now the haunting question is this, and it is a dilemna that I've pondered... have I just given a bunch of guys with unknown intentions/morals step-by-step instructions on how to exploit women in AA? I just don't want that to be the case, but it could happen... The idea gnaws at me sometimes... Gang? What do you think? Guest guest
Apple, I believe the group of guys to whom you refer are not in need of step by step instructions on how to exploit women. They already know how that is done. I believe that it is important to acknowledge that this behavior exists. I was stocked for two years by one of these AA sick-o guys. He even suggested to me and others that it was his " higher-power " that " brought us together. " Scary! Leaving AA and learning to THINK FOR MYSELF has been one of the most empowering things I have ever done. I believe that other women who come to your cite will welcome what you have to say. Guest guest
Hi : I was stalked by two AA sickos myself. I have to say that I wasn't a good judge of character. That damn " womanly nurturer " " feeling sorry for losers " -itis is a personality trait that I needed to LOSE ASAP. I got more benefit from one hour at the Women's Crisis Center where I learned what signs to look for to identify potentially dangerous people, than I did from years of AAs dogma: " we're all forgiven now " " It's not right to be judgemental " " we are all God's little children... we shouldn't JUDGE " That line in your post " it was our " higher Power " which " brought us together " .... well, there's only one proper response to that... I'ts my Higher Power pressing the button of my stun gun... ZZZZZZZZAAAAAPPPP!! People who intentionally hurt others are going to do it with or without you. On the other hand, if you keep quiet, women who are being hurt in AA , like so many of us here were, may not know there is anything wrong with that. Waddaya gonna do? Stay in bed all the time so you don't accidentally do something that makes someone else feel bad? That's no way to live. Life is a rough and tumble affair for everyone, no one gets out alive. Guest guest
HOW TO SPOT DANGEROUS MEN: 1) Men who are not nice to children or animals. If they're not nice to these little ones, you can be sure they won't be nice to you. They tend to see women as among the diminuitives. I'll give you an example: In my area, there are a lot of deer. Many of the deer get run over by cars/trucks. It's very sad, but there are always dead deer to be found by the roadside (which breaks my heart). I saw a truck the other day that had a fancy plastic accessory attached to the front fender. On the " plastic shield " or whatever it was, was a painted message " BAMBI BUSTER " . This guy obviously gets a kick out of killing deer dead with his truck. He would NOT be good date material. 2) Men who order your food for you or tell you what to wear. If he tries to exercise control over these decisions which should be yours alone, he is a controlling man. It all starts with the Lobster Thermidore, and often ends up with whom you can see, where you can go, how you can spend your money & so on. 3) Look for inconsistencies in what he says, and notice if there is a lot of secrecy. You can NEVER go to his house or meet his family, is a clue that the guy might be married. 4) Listen to how he talks about ex wives/girlfriends. Those b*tches are not like YOU... YOU'RE SPECIAL! Yes, well, those b*tches all started out the same way... just like YOU. Apple > At 04:20 AM 02/09/99 -0700, you wrote: > >Hi : > >I was stalked by two AA sickos myself. Guest guest
And Apple, You may also here this man say, " I used to be an ass hole, but I'm better now. " You may also notice that he does not claim to have done something to change this behavior; rather--he will give credit for this change to " the wonderful program " that changed his life. You may too notice that he is more than just a little vested in convincing you that this behavior was not his fault but HER'S. Hmmm.
