I do notice my daughters breath once in awhile when her ketones are highest.

(usually in the evening) I don't really think it's bad, just kind of a

fruity smell and I really don't notice it that much. (maybe once or twice a

week) She is only 2 so we haven't given it much thought and I don't know

what you can do for it but really wouldn't worry too much about it!

Kind of ironic that this whole thing on bad breath came up today because I was going to write in about bad breath.

I teach my daughter at home because of her developmental delays and when she was reading to me this morning, I noticed her terrible breath. I thought maybe it was because she no longer uses a mint toothpaste. Our dietician told us to use only Arm & Hammer baking soda toothpaste.

Any thoughts on how to get rid of it. I understand mouthwash is not an option.

I have noticed what I call "ketone breath" ....... when Katera is really ketotic. It's smells kind of like acetone or nail polish remover, but you would have to get really close to her to smell it. Not terribly noticable.

When my daughter first started the diet, her breath often had a smell like

nail polish remover. Some people describe this expelling of ketones on the

breath as sweet, but to me it smelled chemically. However, I seemed to be

more sensitive to this smell than others. My daughter is 17, and she has

just been very up front with other teens about what she is doing and

especially why, and that if she has a funny smell to her breath, to let her

know and she will go wash out with some mouthwash. So far, no one as ever

mentioned anything to her... If your daugher does have this issue, believe

me, it is a very small price to pay for the wonders of this diet, if it is

successful for you. Good luck!

Ketosis will often cause the breath to smell like the acetone in nail polish

remover, because acetone is a ketone. Its nothing like the bad breath caused

by bacteria or poor oral hygeine. Hannah's breath only smells of acetone

when she is too acidotic, and usually appears with other symptoms of

acidosis. Normally her day to day breath smells more like the Ross CHO free

formula that she has in her gtube feeds.

I've noticed this too, on days Rohan has a lot of

seizures. I wonder whether it's a digestive thing?
