Guest guest
I've got to tell you, Silly Yaks, it's been a rough two weeks in our family. Our 11-year-old Silly Yak has been undergoing treatment for severe anxiety--very scary, very stressful. We have a great doctor, and we're very hopeful, but it's heartbreaking to watch your little one suffer so! To top it off, my hubby, who's only 45, in great shape, eats very healthy (you know what's coming) had serious chest pains while on a business trip and ended up in the O.R. this morning. He had a very clogged artery and was given a stent. Prognosis is excellent. My daughter is very distressed, of course that daddy isn't at home tonight, but we're hanging in--could have been much worse! The most remarkable thing is, I'm coming up on eight GF months, and I have been as calm as can be through all of this! I used to be so high strung, it was unbelievable! I think gluten used to make me act like a nutcase! My husband told his nurse today that he is married to a whole other woman! And the icing on the cake is we stopped at the store on the way home from the hospital, and they had Dr. Praeger's fish sticks! I started dancing in the frozen food aisle with a box in each hand! Here I am, with a very stressed-out child and a husband in the cardiac unit, and I'm dancing with fish sticks! Just thought you all might want to know! PS: The fish sticks were GREAT! Guest guest
Dana, We were so sorry to hear about your daughter and husband's health problems. Your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. I wanted to mention that anxiety attacks were one of the first symptoms that my husband had when his celiac started. It took another 15 years for a correct diagnosis. The darn attacks are pretty scary! I know exactly what you mean. We took him to the ER twice because we thought he was having a heart attack. Hang in there! Guest guest
" I started dancing in the frozen food aisle with a box in each hand! " Dana, Am new to the Silly Yaks community, but I had to respond to your post. I, too, know that glorious feeling upon finding treasured gf items at the local supermarket. I did the same silly dance and felt like crying when I first saw Midel gf animal cookies, gf frozen waffles, gf pastas, gf brownie mixes and Pamela's gf choc. chip cookies at a mainstream local supermarket. It's an experience not too many can understand. I was telling everyone I met: boy cleaning aisle, produce guy, cashier, box girl... " you guys have GF stuff! " I am sorry about your situation right now and although things may seem to be overwhelming... one day at a time and slow and steady are very true in these situations. I had the same thing going on last year when our son was being diagnosed with CD. He was hospitalized for 12 days, I was 5 months pregnant and my husband was experiencing severe mental anxiety/depression/breakdown. But, we made it through and with the Lord's help we are all fine now! God bless! Guest guest
Barbara, you know, the only symptom my daughter ever had was the anxiety, and I am beginning to think that even though she's been GF for three months, she'd eaten gluten for 11 years. Plenty of time to give the gluten-related anxiety time to establish a foothold. She was only a little anxious before going GF, more than the average kid, but these past two weeks, the floodgates have opened up. Fortunately, her psychiatrist was in practice as an MD for some time before starting his psych practice, and he is very familiar with CD. He is also having her thyroid tested. He has seen kids with thyroid problems exhibit a lot of anxiety. Speaking for myself, having been GF for eight months now, I can honestly say I am a very changed person psycologically. I was very uptight, easily upset, always wound up and ready to fly off the handle. Every month I seem to get calmer and more relaxed. I just can't seem to work up a head of steam about anything these days. My hubby says it's a miracle! Yea, it's a miracle called "gluten free!" I'm hopeful my daughter will have some positive results soon--she is such a little sweetheart, and so undeserving of such psycological torment.
