Guest guest
Hi Crew! Caren has some good points (as usual- you GO girl!!). I agree that a hotel should not have to provide a TTY for every room (and they don't as per the ADA just 10% of the # of voice phones in airports and malls- I don't know what the figure is for hotels) but should have a limited # of TTY's onhand for guests to use... I agree that the Braille in the drive thru is stupid, and I don't think the ADA requires THAT!! Plus, the world is changing and all growing pains are tough.... Yes providing access costs some extra dough, but compared to the costs of a lawsuit (Like Clint Eastwood's) its nothing... ciao- JJ ) 12 Ways to Support the ADA Mark , Mark_@..., writes: 1. " ========================================== << At the risk of ticking everybody off here, why is it the hotel's responsibility to provide TTYs? They're portable enough so that we can take our own if we need them. Hotels should be responsible for having access ramps, and accessible bathrooms/showers, etc. But let's draw a line somewhere. >> to have same access to telephone as everyone else has. also, TTY's generally cost 200 + dollars, maybe thats inexpensive to you, but not to me. One tiny bump and you could scrw the whole machine up (besides, have you ever seen how airlines handle your luggage, LOL youd have a bunch of keys and a board where theyre supposed to go). Someone is going to bring up portable TTY's, theyre cute, very small, and easy to carry around, however, anyone who's hands are as messed up as mine are will agree, those keys are entirely too small to type with. alll I can say is, it's a law so there shoould be no excuses what so ever. Guest guest
There could be other reasons for the braille keys too: 1) The machines are made to a certain standard and to customize it for various locations would be more expensive. 2) The passengers may may need to use the bank machine. ---------- From: Jimmy Sent: Friday, May 19, 2000 3:14 PM To: NF2_Crewegroups Subject: Re: ADA in the news i have a comment on braille drive thrus.I have iffy eyesight, people take me to the atm alot,it is alot easier to read a computer monitor then it's key pad.I can see how braille keys could help people who are legally blind. Guest guest
Hey Jenn, I'm not taking sides here but sometimes you have to complain. I know you have to draw the line too but that line is very hazy. When I became deaf in 1986, my parents paid $550 for a CC converter. Seems to me someone was feeding off the deaf. Where would we be if nobody complained that the CC converters should be built into the TV itself?? I agree that if you don't like something, go elsewhere. A lot of places try hard to get your business. The law adds restrictions and red tape but it also makes a bit of sense. I'm not one to complain myself but that visual fire alarm could save your life. I always check to see where the fire exits are in a hotel but having the alarm does not hurt. ---------- From: Jennette Braaten Sent: Friday, May 19, 2000 2:36 PM To: NF2_Crewegroups Subject: Re: ADA in the news Excellent, !!) Guest guest
Hi Crew~ Knowing or assuming you will one day be in a wheelchair is no way to go through life. I've said it before but just do it NOW! And cherish what you can while you can- appreciate the wonders of life. Travel. Spend time with your kids.... Anything could happen in 10 years or tommorow (Even a cure). Yes, I am a wheelchair user and no it does not suck as much as people would believe but yes it took sometime to adjust (finally, I understood that there was no other choice for ME and I embraced it, like we do with our deafness). My point is, please dont live that way, you can't do that to yourself... ) peace- JJ ========================================================== In a message dated 5/19/00 9:41:59 AM Eastern Daylight Time, cinnyd@... writes: << why does this statement bother me? i'll be the 1st to admit its bc of my own fears, i knw the possibility is there for all of us. i know thats not wht your post was abt, it was abt inaccessibity for handicapped. it irks me too.! but how do u live with " knowing or assuming " you wil or may be one day in a wheel chair?
