Guest guest
Your sore, hard little salivary gland is likely a result of the RAI you had in May. Many of us have had salivary glands flare up months after an ablative dose of RAI. Sometimes it takes an ENT to unblock them. I had problems beginning 3-6 months after one of my ablations and it lasted for months (my Endo suggested going to an ENT, but I was sick of Drs. appts. and thought the salivary gland problem to be no more than a nuisance I could live with). The problem eventually went away all by itself. Marilyn > > Is this something to worry about? > > Can papillary thyca spread to the salivary glands? Would I be able to feel > > it? Guest guest
Dear : The RAI can do a number on your salivary glands. However, you should have it looked at. Call the surgeon or arrange for an ENT to see you. Best Wishes, Marilyn Loeb, Rochester, NY a little worried... Hi folks! I'm a little worried and wanted to get your advice... I found a strange lump in my right salivary gland last night, and I'm a little nervous... My TT was in March of this year. During the RAI this May, my salivary glands puffed up and I lost my taste for a month or so, but then things were back to normal by June. I didn't give those salivary glands a second thought until a couple of days ago -- as I was brushing my teeth on Sunday, I noticed that the side of my face was sore. At first I thought it was a problem with my upper-right wisdom tooth (I still have all four), but the soreness became more acute, and after investigating in my upper jaw I realized that my wisdom tooth wasn't the problem. I can feel a distinct lump over my right salivary gland (or at least I think that's what it is - the lump is in that area) that is *not* on the left side. It's so sore that it hurt to put on makeup this morning! :-) Is this something to worry about? Can papillary thyca spread to the salivary glands? Would I be able to feel it? Could this be a complication from the RAI (the iodine settled in my salivary glands as well as my thyroid bed, as sometimes happens)? My endo is on vacation for the next week, so I can't ask him...(i'm actually on hold right now on the phone with the nurse in his office to try to schedule an appt). This scared me quite a bit last night, but now it almost sounds silly. Arrg - I don't want to become frightened by every ache or pain! Many thanks for your thoughts... :-) be well , 25, Wash, DC dx pap thyca 02/01 TT 03/01 RAI 05/01 thyroplasty 07/01 For more information regarding thyroid cancer visit www.thyca.org. Guest guest
, Salivary gland problems (including stones, which feel like " strange lumps " ) are almost always side effects of RAI. My endo referred me to an ear/nose/throat specialist for mine; since your endo is out of town, you might ask for a referral to an ENT. Salivary gland problems can be very painful, but they're not medically dangerous. ellen -- mailto:ellen@...

Guest guest
Dear : I hope these folks are right in that it is a temporary nuisance and not a long time problem. I am still awaiting my first RAI so cannot add any words of expereince but I wish you the best and hope it goes away. Regards..Sonu Mitts -- In Thyca@y..., " A.
