Guest guest
Monika, Thank you for continuing this conversation (I did not realize it was you!) I agree wholeheartedly about not being fearful and territorial, and have always operated with that same philosophy. Years ago, when I first began teaching in the community, I was contracted as a " Slim for Life " instructor with the American Heart Association of Colorado. Well, there were only 3 RD's " allowed " to teach the programs in northern Colorado, of which I was one. The program became so successful ( " word of mouth " spread quickly about the quality of the programs we taught) and soon the local hospital decided they wanted a " Slim for Life " program too, but wanted one of their own hospital RD's to teach it. I realized they would take some of our clients but saw the wisdom is saying OK, however, I was outvoted by the other 2 RD's. I reasoned so what if they " cut into " our clientelle " territory " . The added promotion of the programs by the hospital would make up for that and, if we " lost out " in the short run it could only be better somewhere down the road. I was outvoted. Guess what happened--the hospital developed their own program and they " cut into " our " territory " anyway. So I have not engaged in this conversation because I believe there is a right or wrong way here. I appreciate you have continued the conversation so that some of us can all think about and discuss the REALITY of what is going on out there. This is what it is, and we, as dietitians, must both educate in our little or big corner of the world that we DO have a unique and useful skill set, AND work within the reality of the bigger picture in whatever ways we think best. I am curious why no one else has commented. I am wondering if this is a touchy subject, or if it is just so cut-and-dry so as to not warrant comment. I appreciate your perspective Monika. And please do forgive me if I am a little sensitive to the topic--I have met one too many physical trainer who is trying to be a dietitian.
