goodness everyone - this trail of emails is a nuisance - usually I don't

complain, honest. I have this email group on digest to decrease email.

Then I got to thinking I might be missing soemthing. Apparently not. Can

this be done privately instead of these trickle of emails?

Hi there, I'm just curious about what kinds of coupons you all use

and where you get them- the ones I get in the newspaper are for

packaged junk foods that I wouldn't be buying anyway. I know Whole

Foods and our natural foods co-op have " healthier " coupon booklets,

but those tend to be specialty items, that again, I wouldn't buy

routinely so I'd actually be spending more money to use the

coupons ;) I'd love to find more ways to save money on food, but so

far I've decided it's one of those things that is important enough to

our health and the planet, to pay top dollar to get the best. We save

money in other areas, like cooking from scratch, making my own

cleaning products, buying almost all of our clothes and household

goods used from thrift stores, etc.

Anyway- just wondering how this works to help people save money AND

eat healthy!

Keep in mind that there are always some things people won't part or change

with: maybe organics for you, another a more expensive coffee, etc. A lot of

my deals have to do with doing without things I never really needed or if I

thought about didn't want in the long run.

1) For example I don't buy magazines for the most part but I get over 20+

free ones at any one time.

2) I don't buy a newspaper but my parents buy 2 on Sunday and they can't

bother with the coupons so they give them to me.

3) Library is a free source of books (at least for 3 weeks). So is my local

recycling center which has a trailer full of ones that you can take for

free. Of course I bring mine there to donate.

4) I look for special deals for toys for our Toy Lift all through the year.

I can fill my van with toys and not spend more than $100. So deals are for

giving too!! Lots of items for the Food Bank including sundries.

5) I bought a $25 purse for $1.74 at Target - you need to wait until

something is on sale (in this case 75% off clearance) and you have a coupon.

6) Many stores including Target (has great coupons on their website-

www.target.com and click on coupons), Walgreens, CVS, local grocery stores

will let you use their coupon PLUS a manufacturers coupon - then wait for a

sale - free or close to free.I haven't paid more than .50 for toothpaste

(many times free) in years for example. Donate the extras!!

7) I just don't buy much meat (cholesterol) and beans are cheap!!! My hubby

lets me get away with adding beans to lots of dishes so I let him keep his

soda addiction (deals galore).

The list goes on....

Folks, It really depends on how hungry you are how much a coupon is worth to

you. So you're right Jan. A short but very true and personal story.

About 6 - 7 years ago my youngest daughter met w some misfortune and it caused

her a huge financial reversal. Because of her desperate situation and not

wanting to have us (her parents) involved she took care of herself as best she

could and managed to have adequate and safe shelter, and enough funds to eat.

For about a year she did quite well by managing to buy most, if not all her food

at what was then Pic'N Save, then eventually Big Lots. All of it was processed

and canned, supplemented by produce she bought at a co-op or Farmer's Market,

and after finding a room in a place where she could plant, by her own garden.

She used coupons, credits, recycling, and not only lived and survived, but ate

well enough and remained healthy.

Sure, organic is great, but guess what? by my definition plants and animals are

organic and they nourish. So, depending on your needs, and how hungry you get,

is what and how you chose to eat. How many homeless and starving wouldn't love

to have that $1 a day meal? I'm certain they'd not be worried about the can or

box that surrownded the food before they got it to hit their empty bellies.

Digna

Re: Eating Well on $1/day - you decide

IF at least half of the coupons are for " real food " - devoid of artificial

colors, flavors and sweeteners, I'd also be interested.

I happen to have, currently, coupons from Eden foods, Organic Valley diary,

many truly healthy, even organic foods, and WILL use them on products I

currently buy.

But, if it takes me 10 minutes to save a $, I only " made " $6/hour, so not

at all worth my time, unless I was a person making minimum wage.

But, I agree with others, most coupons are for products I don't buy and

would never recommend others buy.

Not a chance Carol. Use your delete key or finger as fast as you can. I've

read each and every one of them with a great deal of interest and
