Trish, I cannot believe how positive you sound amongst the most trying of

circumstances, I applaud you! Yes, dehydration will make you sleepy.

Hi everyone!

Things in the Rodrigues' household have been jumping since I came home from

the Rehab Hospital.

If any of you have forgotten, I had a G-tube and a J-tube inserted on March

8th. I stayed at Mass. General for almost 4 weeks and then a Rehab hospital

for 2 weeks.

First, I had a couple of days after coming home from the Rehab Hospital that

were okay and then I started vomiting big time. Very extremely nauseasous,

pains, and just plain vomiting all the time. I knew something was wrong with

my G-tube right away. (It was also wandering in and out of my stomach) I

ended up at the ER two Fridays ago and the brilliant doc there said, " Do you

think you have the flu? " DAH!!! I said " No " but I just wanted out of there

so I could call my own doctor in the morning....I was getting no where. We

got home that night after midnight after spending a useless 11 hours in the

ER! I waited Sat. out but by Sunday my nurse said that I had better get up

there since I was vomiting bile and nothing was in my drainage bag and I just

looked awful. I called my surgeon's answering service and I got a nice

surgeon who said that I must be admitted.....so off to the ER again.....and I

was admitted. They couldn't figure out what was wrong.....I kept saying that

I thought the G-tube was dislodged....no one listened to me!

Finally on Monday...I went for tube studies....and voi la!!!!! The balloon

was blocking the opening to the intestines. I was happy because I knew this

was easy to fix. My surgeon was in my room when I got back and was happy

too. She showed me how to deflate the balloon and take the tube out and put

a new one in.....it is not hard at all. But now I have these attachment

devices on my stomach that hold the G-tube and J-tube in place.....they are

used by colostomy patients....they are uncomfortable but at least they hold

the tubes in place.

So now everything was going OK until yesterday. I gave myself my meds

through the J-tube and everything was fine.....I was flushing fine and

everything....so it seemed the tube was clear....then I unhooked so I could

go take a shower with my homehealth aid.....when I came back I hooked up to

the feeds again and then the pump started alarming.....that meant that there

was a flow error. I told the homehealth aid that I had better flush the

tube....so we attempted to flush....and guess what.....I had a major blockage

in the J-tube. UGH!!!! When you get a blockage in the tube, you have to

flush with Diet Coke, Gingerale, or Cranberry Juice.

Well, I tried the Coke and Ginerale and nothing! I tried for 2 hours!!!!

I had to call the surgeon AGAIN and tell her I had a blockage. She always

told me....if you have something wrong with the J-tube, you must come up to

the ER.....so here we went again.....back to the ER....and on a

Sunday..... was NOT too happy.....he is so tired of going up there and so

am I.

We got into the ER pretty quickly...that was amazing! And the covering

surgeon was there!!!! Too good to be true! He came in and said he wanted a

new tube put in. He is the Head of Surgery so I thought this would go

smoothly. But then another surgeon came in and said that the team of

surgeons who were going to put this tube in couldn't do it last night

.....they wanted to do it first thing THIS morning. was very

upset.....he said... " Oh brother...I CANNOT stay out of work AGAIN! I will

lose my job! " Poor ....he is just so stressed out!

The surgeon said that he had one more tactic to try and if that didn't work,

then they were going to admit me AGAIN so that I could have the tube replaced

in the morning.

In he came with a kit with a irrigation syringe and a long wire with a curly

thing on the end. He stuck it in and he hit something and I said " Ouch!

Please don't hit my intestine! " I don't know what he hit....but anyway he

unclogged it....and I didn't have to stay and get a new tube this time!

HORRAY!!!!

The thing that is bothering me now, however, is that I have terrible diarrhea

and feel very weak....I am getting dehydrated and feel very sleepy. Do you

get sleepy from dehydration?

I am going to the doctors again on Wed. and will tell them about the diarrhea.

I am now trying to eat some food by mouth too....do you think that it is just

too much food...or maybe is it the change in formula that they gave me, or

maybe it is my coilitis coming back.....I don't know what it is.

I am sorry that I have been quiet lately, but I just have not been feeling

too well and it takes a LOT of energy to sit at this computer.

Thanks for listening....this J-tube and G-tube thing has really changed my

life....even though it is hard maintaining them....I am happy for one

thing.....I no longer vomit every day....that is a blessing in itself!
