Betty Jarusiewicz, PhD, LCADC

Dr. Jarusiewicz is a licensed drug and alcohol

counselor who delved into Neurofeedback first to

assist in the recovery process in addiction and then

in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Dr.

Jarusiewicz developed a non-profit organization,

Atlantic Research Institute, to facilitate her

research, which includes a pilot project testing the

efficacy of neurofeedback for autism. Dr. Jarusiewicz

served on the board of directors of EEG

Spectrum International and is author of the study

entitled Efficacy of Neurofeedback for Children in

the Autistic Spectrum: A Pilot Study, published in

the Journal of Neurotherapy.

Dr. Betty's Story - Exclusive report

Her childhood behavior was

considered odd; now her biggest joy is helping

families

“Dr Betty”, as the families she works with know her,

knows autism from the inside out. In her childhood

her behavior was considered odd – the schools

initially thought it was because her parents were

German immigrants, when in fact, she just had great

difficulty speaking and understanding social

references. Eventually the schools sent her to

speech class to help her “find” the words and be

able to speak them clearly, as she stuttered.

She was very lucky as she was placed in a private

prep school from fourth grade through high school,

where small classes were the norm. Also the

teachers, not exactly knowing what to do with her,

allowed her to learn “her” way, which was to sit in

the back or on the side of the room, observe the

class, take the work home to learn how she could do

it, and she soon worked out a learning process that

functioned for her.

When she had children she had great difficulty

knowing what to do for her first child, a boy, who

cried and screamed almost all of the time. Forty-six

years ago little was known about the type of

behaviors he exhibited. Psychiatrists consulted at

Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute in San

Francisco described the condition as “brain damage”

stating nothing could be done. A daughter and

another son were born, the boy having significant

speech delay. She parented the best way she knew

how. Today all the children are doing extremely

well, though considered less than social. Up until she was in her mid fifties, Betty sorted

the data as it came into her brain, mainly by

dissociation. One day, perhaps due to stress, this

process broke down completely and she was unable to

work at the job she had as a systems VP at NASDAQ.

While on disability she returned to school for her

PhD to try to understand the brain. She assumed that

the family problem was addiction, the disease her

mother died of. In hindsight it appears that her

mother self medicated a disordered brain. It was during Betty’s training in Neurotherapy did

the basis of her family issues become clear.

Genetically disordered brains was the basis of the

problems life presented to the family and the

diagnosis of autism could be applied to some of the

grandchildren. Other grandchildren showed signs of

ADHD and other neurologically based problems.

Dr. Betty knows the frustrations of the individual,

the parent, and the grandparent in dealing with

brain disregulation issues. She believes she knows

how many in the spectrum feel – due to the ups and

downs of the brain frequencies, the speech and

understanding problems, the allergy and sensitivity

issues, the problems of stress, etc. Her research

work has helped her find a bridge to a more

successful happy life for herself and others. She no

longer suffers from migraines, she has learned to

deal with all the allergies and sensitivities that

life throws her, and she has worked out a way that

she can participate in various life experiences like

school, exercise, diets, and even some socialization.

Today her biggest joy is providing Neurofeedback and

counseling to families, where her life and research

experience can benefit many.

Speaker Spotlight - Heath - mother of four young children – the oldest of which has an autism spectrum disorder

Heath is first and foremost the mother of four

young children – the oldest of which has an autism

spectrum disorder. Her experiences in Early

Intervention working as an autism specialist, and

also as a parent, have given her a broad

understanding of the diverse educational methods

appropriate for children on the spectrum. She

developed a popular parent education class using

play to enhance social emotional development. In the

past few years she provided that training to all of

Utah’s early intervention programs and provides

on-going support to several sites. She also

currently works as a consultant for families using

the principles of Stanley Greenspan’s DIR

(Developmental, Individual-Difference,

Relationship-Based)/Floortime model. She is

passionate about empowering parents with a

developmental framework that optimizes their child’s

development.
