Summary: In a review of randomized, double-blind, controlled trials

assessing the effects of higher dose vitamin D and higher 25(OH)D level

and prevention of falls and fractures, a significant dose-response

relationship was observed between higher dose of vitamin D and higher

25(OH)D level and greater prevention of falls and fractures. Data from a

total of 44,705 subjects was analyzed. The greatest effects were found

for the highest dose of vitamin D tested (700-1000 IU/d) and the highest

levels of 25(OH)D (75-110 nmol/l) achieved. The authors conclude, “Our

analysis suggests that mean serum 25(OH)D levels of about 75 to 110

nmol/l provide optimal benefits for all investigated endpoints without

increasing health risks. These levels can be best obtained with oral

doses in the range of 1,800 to 4,000 IU vitamin D per day....â€
