Lynette, I remember reading a discussion on the internet where some of a fancy brand of spices had gluten in them, but most of them did not. So gluten definitely can be in spices.

RE: GF soy sauce - can anyone help?

I think people should not assume that something has gluten in it just because the company won’t comment or “stick their neck out’ and state that something is gluten-free. We have used La Choy Soy Sauce for a few years now and my daughter has no reaction. The whole family likes it and so I can make a family meal with it. We tried San-J and hated it. So I think it comes down to personal taste and quality of life. If there seems to be no reason for there to be hidden gluten in an item, the celiac doesn’t react , it tastes good and there is no alternative then why not use it?

That also brings me to the “tip” that many spices contain wheat as a de-clumping agent. Again I think this is a myth because most companies use silicon dioxide or nothing at all. Does anyone know of a company that uses wheat in their seasonings?

I agree with you that the "spices with wheat in them" is probably a myth. I personally have not found a brand yet that contains wheat or any other grain, for that matter, as a declumping agent.

However, when we speak of spices, we are referring to plain spices in the jar or container. Seasoning packets are another thing completely. Many seasoning packets contain wheat. Just check the ingredients listings.
