Did you read the ingredients in La Choy? Unless they just recently changed it, it is gluten free.

According to the CSA Gluten-Free Product Listing

(8th edition) La Choy soy sauce is GF. I have some in my pantry….there’s

nothing on the label that would suspect other than the carmel color…which has

been verified as a GF source by the CSA.

La Choy has two GF sauces: Stir Fry Mandarin Soy Sauce and Stir Fry Spicy Szechuan Sauce. Note: La Choy's regular and lite soy sauces are not GF; only the Stir Fry Mandarin Soy Sauce is GF.(2)

Dawn,

I phoned La Choy, very nice people, and spoke with Vicki and she

spoke with a senior representative, Barb, she says there is nothing

specifically named as gluten in La Choy soy sauce, HOWEVER, there is

gluten in it. They do not recommend you use their product if you

have a gluten intolerance.

Until today I was using La Choy also! I am so glad you asked the

question!

How do you get to this info on the CSA

website? I cannot find it. I would really like to find this info….I’ve

got dinner in the oven and it contains LaChoy soy sauce.

I have a bottle in my refrigerator. Ingredients are: water, salt, hydrolyzed soy protein, corn syrup, carmel color, potassium sorbate

All ingredients are GF.

It was in an old newsletter (a couple of years old) that came up when I did a search. Maybe the status of La Choy has changed since its publication.

I am so confused now, based on all the emails related to this. I am not sure what to believe, especially since 2 different people spoke to La Choy and received conflicting information. It would be nice if La Choy had it posted on their website.

I am just going to continue to avoid it, just to be safe. I use both San J Organic Tamari Soy Sauce (wheat free version) or Eden Organic Tamari Soy Sauce (also wheat free version). I have multiple bottles so that I always have it on hand, in case I go out for Chinese or Sushi. As a matter of fact, last night I went to a Thai restaurant and gave them my soy sauce so they could prepare my dish with it. It was wonderful... The only thing I have noticed is that the Tamari Soy is much stronger than other soy sauces, so you have to use less or it will overpower the food.

We really like Eden Tamari -- at Whole Foods. It's much better than

I again called La Choy today, after two calls yesterday to

verify the information I previously stated. I told them what

happened with two of us calling and were given two different

answers.

Senior Rep Allan Best, 1-, says anyone may call and

speak to him on his private line. He told me there were recent

changes and La Choy regular soy sauce is not considered gluten free

because they are unable to verify the grain source and it may

contain gluten at this time. He did agree to send me a letter and I

will send it on when I get it.

Please call Allan Best at 1- to verify.

I think people should not assume that

something has gluten in it just because the company won’t comment or “stick

their neck out’ and state that something is gluten-free. We have

used La Choy Soy Sauce for a few years now and my daughter has no

reaction. The whole family likes it and so I can make a family meal with

it. We tried San-J and hated it. So I think it comes down to

personal taste and quality of life. If there seems to be no reason for

there to be hidden gluten in an item, the celiac doesn’t react , it

tastes good and there is no alternative then why not use it?

That also brings me to the “tip”

that many spices contain wheat as a de-clumping agent. Again I think this

is a myth because most companies use silicon dioxide or nothing at all.

Does anyone know of a company that uses wheat in their seasonings?

Lynette, I remember reading a discussion on the internet where some of a fancy brand of spices had gluten in them, but most of them did not. So gluten definitely can be in spices.
