I know I have told you all about my battle with the scale. It has been going on for as long as I can remember and that is quite a while. I decided to move my scale into my basemet away from easy access and I have found I am still compulsed to go and use it. Not as much as I used to but still at least once a day. I figure it is good exercise going down and up the stairs. :-) All kidding aside, I did find out I have lost 7 pounds since my near meltdown email to the list professing "the number". I am so proud. I haven't exercised as much as I should so I am sure if I put a bit more time into exercising I could lose a bit more but I am not going to force myself. I have listened to my body and I have fed it when it has needed fed and it feels good. I just wanted to share this "breakthrough" with you all. I am sure the road

ahead is going to be bumpy but I am looking forward to the challenge. Michele

Glad to hear it , I got rid of my scale.

Hi Michele,

I'm glad to hear that you are making progress and that your body is

feeling better. At the same time, I want to give you this CAUTION.

When you give the scale the power to make you feel good or proud,

you also give it power to make you feel bad. The number on the

scale is not something to be proud of...it's just a number if it

goes UP or DOWN or stays the same. What you should be proud of are

the things you are doing to make yourself healthy. Keep up the good

work fueling and exercizing your body.

Thank you Amy, I know I am giving the scale that power and that is something I am working on fixing. Right now I think it is better than giving the food the power it does not deserve. I want to be able to have the power to control the way I am going to eat and the way it is going to make me feel, but until I am able to get it for myself, I am going to have to rely on the stupid scale. So far I have said to myself every time I stepped on the scale, it is just a number. I am sure there will be days when I can't be rational about the scale and days when I will rely on it more than I should, but until I can get a feel for my body I will have to keep it around and use it when the time arrives. I know it needs to be thrown away but I need it right now. It is my security blanket. Michele amytherrien

I'm always torn on this issue. On the one hand, I was

discussing my weight with my doc and he said I was doing

EXACTLY what I should be doing and had no worries, and he

instructed me to go home and LITERALLY throw my scale

away! Ask me if I did? Of course not. But the reason

I didn't do it is I've discovered through the years

that I have something like " REVERSE ANOREXIA " - I

look at myself in a mirror and just do NOT see when

I'm putting on weight. It doesn't register with me

for whatever reason. So I still weigh but I've

learned to put a different emphasis on it. I'm no

longer concerned with the number itself - I keep an

eye on it only because I acknowledge that I'm

somehow incapable of noticing when my weight

starts to climb. So stepping on there a couple times

a week lets me know if I'm heading up, even though I've

quit obsessing about the actual number.

If I see it go DOWN, well that's just terrific.

If it stays the same, also a victory.

If it fluctuates a pound or two, well whose doesn't?

It's only if I see it going up by more than that on a

consistent basis that I use it as my signal to change

something. Other than that, I'm just not getting caught up

in the number.

Hope that makes sense and helps some.

I'm sorry; I know this is probably silly, but I just read my own post

and noticed I typed " way " instead of " weigh, " and it was just driving

me crazy. So, I had to point it out even though I'm sure it was

obvious what I meant to type...I'm just neurotic.

This is my issue as well. I weigh myself many many many times a day. It is an addiction for me. I used to keep track of my weight every time I did weigh but that got to be too much for me so I stopped doing it. I wish I had the answers. I have learned to rationalize the fluctuation in weight and I know that isn't a good thing either. Sorry I don't have any answers. In my Eating disorders program I was in, some of the ladies turned in

their scales. I would recommend this option the most. Although it may

be one of the toughest things you have to do, it's probably better

to get rid of your safety net, because in the same respect I feel like

a cigarette addict must get rid of the cigaretttes and an alcoholic

must get rid of the alcohol in order to learn how to live without it.

In my Eating disorders program I was in, some of the ladies turned in

When I first read Geenen Roth's books, I 'tossed' my scale and didn't

weigh myself for YEARS. Of course I wasn't practicing IE so the

'freedom' I thought I found = a license to EAT and I gained weight :(

A while back my hubby started recording his blood pressure on a weekly

basis so I made us a chart which we added weight on as well so we

could have a (gentle?) reality check on a weekly basis. This is

working for us.
