If he is not at school he is here with Mom and Dad 24-7!! He is bored out of his gord. Plus is is sort of difficult to find activities that interest him. His vision is not that great for things like movies. Besides he doesn't sit still that long. We are always racking our brains for something new and different for him to try but usually come up short. This is a real problem. Where is Perkins at. I think Mark would like to go somewhere different just to go!! And at 18 I think he really needs it. He will need constant supervision if he ever gets out on his own. I can relate to your concerns, and his behavior has been a bit of a problem off and on this year. Guest guest
Martha, I am in Michigan. My Mark does go to different jobs through his school. He seems to enjoy that. It is the social thing that is difficult. I hate to say it but I am a bit burnt out and the thought of trying to arrange this stuff myself is just too much. I mean he goes where ever the family goes and sometimes even that is difficult. He has a couple kids his own age who sit with him when we are at work. He does ok with that too. It is the fun and enjoyable things we have trouble with. If you know of any sources we can tap into or contact let us know. He attends Elmer Knoph Learning Center here (TMI) which is a great school and very active. He has an interpreter there which helps a lot. It is just the principle I think that our kids don't have friends who come to go " out " with and to get such a thing to happen is a JOB in itself. If something troubles him now look out!!! If the bus is delayed or if we take an alternate route somewhere he comes unglued. And the thing is that he is bigger than me now. This makes things difficult if he gets out of hand I can't always control him. The whole idea is very scarey. We just made a medication switch and he seems a little better. Though his sleeping is back to being irregular now. This is not the easiest thing to manage. And now that he has the bladder problem it complicates every activity. Guest guest
Hi, I work with the transition stuff here in Michigan and you are right it should not start when the students reach high school age. I hope all the families of young charge children take it to heart to start a group of non-family friends. My so called normal children (if there is such an animal) made friends on their own the students I work with need help in this area and if you wait until the students are late elementary or middle school the other students all ready have their groups and it is hard if not impossible to get them to let others in. Get your children involved in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church or any other type of activities that they may be interested in. Even a helper to some of the sports team if they can't play. Even if the students find a job they can do it is very hard for them to become part of the group because they do not know how to make that step. We work very hard with the young students on what is a friend, how to be a good friend, conversation skill with both our verbal and nonverbal students. I think the job thing for Patty can work try and get her credit for the work experience so she will not be behind with the credits. Talk with places about an after school job, I know you don't want to hear this but you may have to do this on your own. Are there members of your church or people you work with that have some type of in with people who run businesses in your town. She may have to start in a non-paid positions just to show people she can do the job. I take students to work sites and couple of hours one day a week then hopefully if the students likes the job we try and get them hired this does not always work out but has on many occasions. Guest guest
is 17, and her OCD goes through the roof at times now. We - family and Perkins staff - can't really figure it out. We're trying her on Paxil now - with Ativan when she's very stressed. At times, I just don't like the drugs at all. I'd like to know, too, if others with older CHARGErs have noticed increases in OCD, etc. in the mid to late teen years. Martha

Guest guest
Chantelle: Did your OCD get worse as you grew up? had a touch of it when younger; now, however, there are times when it is truly pronounced. I think you may be right about the seasonal aspect. Our oldest child goes to college in MN, and the winter months simply send her into --- well, I'll call it depression, but it's not that at all. She just turns into a horror... Martha
Guest guest
I dont think I got worse with age. I would say that 4 years ago it was a lot worse. I think I notice it more now and can regulate myself or I go get help. I cant do anything once im in the OCD or depression state, only when I know im heading in that direction (I notice some warning signs) Chantelle
