Guest guest Posted June 16, 1999 Report Share Posted June 16, 1999 Hello everyone, As a nurse, I have a PDR- Physician's Desk Reference- at home in my den, handily near the computer! Dilantin works by stabilizing the outer cell membrane of the neurons (specific cell type) in the brain, especially in the motor cortex ( the part of the brain that sends messages to move the muscles). Specifically, Dilantin reduces the flow of the sodium ion out of the cell, thereby reducing the neuron's " excitability " to go into a seizure- so it's called a " stabilizing " effect. Nothing is mentioned about the mitochondria under how the drug works (clinical pharmacology section). Basically, anti-seizure drugs work by stabilizing the cell's membrane to reduce the frequency of seizures.
