Guest guest
...it is actually MSBP or Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy, where a parent or caregiver intentionally makes a person usually a child sick or falsifies a condition to gain attention from a hospital or doctor. It is a serious mental illness and there has been a rash of cases where moms with actually ill children are being falsely accused. It is really scary. > >Reply-To: Mitoonelist >To: <Mitoonelist> >Subject: Re: support groups >Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 09:26:07 -0700 > > > >what is MPB? > > Re: support groups > > > > > > > >> > >>This is ...Jonah's mom, has anyone else heard of a couple with a > >>child with a mito disorder being falsely accused of child abuse or > >>Munchhausen Syndrome? > > > >The difficulty that I have is that I know one family with a metabolic > >disorder > >who was accused of MBP but it seems that in this case the mother was > >aggravating the symptoms in order to get the doctors to pay attention and > >get a better diagnosis. Guest guest
It is scary that mom's of really sick children can be accused of MBP, and supposedly those that are up on " medical " knowledge are more at risk. I recently read that parents of children with a disease like mito, that is ill understood and can seem so variable, that are educated and assertive are at increased risk for being accused of Munchausen's. But what is even more scary is that this behavior actually exists, and that there are parents that do cause their children to become sick, or that make already sick children worse just for the attention from the medical community. Supposedly it is quite common for this behavior to stem from an initially legitimate acute illness that requires hospitalization and lots of attention, and then when the child improves and the situation is resolved the parent misses the attention and begins to create situations that demand the same type of attention and hospitalization. One way to combat this type of accusation is to make sure that you have at least one doc, as the primary care giver that is extremely familiar with your child and their symptoms as well as your family situation. Have everything documented in your child's chart at that office and make an extra effort to make sure that your ped ( or primary care doc) acknowledges or witnesses, and documents symptoms in your child's chart. Whenever possible allow others to witness and/or document the vague or unusual symptoms. Hopefully this won't happen to you, but if it does and you have volumes of chart at the clinic to confirm your child's problems, you'll be in much better shape. Guest guest
, From one attachment parent to another I wish you luck in your struggle with Jonah and the hospital. I think your attitude is wonderful. I have read of several cases of attachment parents of healthy children who run into difficulty with medical and state workers because they do things a little different than the " norm. " When we first moved to Michigan we were visited by a public health nurse (who I called) and when she came and saw that Laney was FTT, she threatened to call social services if I didn't have a pediatrician in a week (we had only been in town one week). I quickly found a ped, who I never did like. But it really made me angry that she thought I was neglecting my daughter--I can only imagine what you are going through. Jonah is lucky to have you. You are in our thoughts and prayers... , mom to Adelaine -- The 's Ann Arbor, MI j-cooper@... http://www.mich.com/~jaj
